Before Sun Ra careened into the jazz avant-garde with his banks of electrickeyboards and highwire group improvisations, he made recordings like *Fate In A Pleasant Mood.* Rich with Ra's persistent astro-mythology, *Fate* is equally rich with an immersion in the history of acid jazz band music. The charts played on Fate are as orchestrally complex as anything anybody wrote, yet they still maintain a clear position on the cusp of the avant-garde. More than anything, changes are the order on Fate, fast runs across difficult melody statements, on-the-fly changes in harmonic aims and rhythmic jumps that illuminate just how completely Sun Ra understood the overlap of jazz traditions in the 1960's...
"Fate" is a wonderful little record. It consists of tracks recorded at various sessions or rehearsals arranged into this release, and because of the performances of the tracks, it demands to be heard. "Space Mates" is a beautiful other-wordly journey complete with dramatic keyboard solo. "Kingdom of Thunder" is a brilliantly rhythmic piece.
"When Sun Comes Out" finds Ra working with a wilder band, one that played something akin to 1960's "free jazz", which typically became squawking exercises in audience disenfranchisement intended to reflect or augment the African-American experience. Here, the sound is given a more cosmological context and cut with an exotic ambience. Pat Patrick on reeds, among other players, goes really wild. Fate In A Pleasant Mood serves as a good entry point into ra's mid-to-late 60's direction.

CONDITION :
The cover gatefold, VG++, solid, has very minor shelf wear only starting, nothing much and otherwise solid. no split seams, no writing, no bends...has a promo sticker at bottom front which only raises the items value, being a limited release...keeper
The vinyl is all glossy and shiny, M- looks and plays TOP level -- the white promo labels are clean, making for a really nice special and rare SUN RA collectible
