PLEASE READ BEFORE BIDDING: Please read the entire auction listing, including shipping costs, before writing to ask a question. OUR GOAL IS CUSTOMER SATISFACTION. In order to meet that goal, we will ALWAYS work with our customers on any concerns that may arise. In the unlikely instance that you feel the need to open a resolution dispute before working with us, you will immediately be blocked from any further chance to acquire the rare music we present each and every week. Payment is required within seven days. We mail all paid items ONE WEEK after auctions end. Please keep in mind our listings are time consuming in detail and we are often traveling to find these gems, which at times delays the delivery schedule by a day or two. We ALWAYS process and ship every paid order. We have no control over parcels once they are mailed from our local Post Office.Overseas mail to some countries (Italy, Russia, France, in particular) has became very slow. Opening a dispute for slow mail is unacceptable and will result in blocking the bidder. We work hard to provide excellent service as is represented by our 8000 plus positive feedback. We use a VPI machine and thoroughly clean all records. Each order is carefully packaged by removing the LP from the jacket to avoid seam splits, use of 3 ml plastic cover sleeves over each LP and jacket, cardboard pad inserts, and placed in sturdy record mailers for safe delivery. We take Customer Service seriously, and want you to be satisfied. Please give us 5 stars in each category through the feedback system, and we will be able to effectively continue to fulfill your passion for rare and collectible music! If ever an album cover needed to be re-designed, this is it! It makes the top 20 most disturbing covers of all time! Indeed in bad taste, but, agreed the wicked heavyrock/psych contents are pretty great - led by a highly infectious sound touched off by guitarist Uli Roth's magic fingers mania; howling feedback frenzy in the vein of late '60s Jimi Hendrix.
The band has stated that the artwork was the brainchild of their record company, guess they were using the "any publicity is good publicity" theory in getting the Scorpions name out to the public - and it worked. German RCA did re-release with a different (group) cover that isn't much better, but at least the guys are clothed and of age...
Attention was very much the idea behind their album cover of Scorpion's fourth release. It wasn't so much the bands blatant disregard of their image, but that the record label needed to create a public stunt to gain notice. So they decided that Virgin Killer would be shipped to the stores with a pre-pubescent girl on the cover even if it meant that they themselves went to jail. If a band tried that today they would no doubt end up in deep trouble. Thirty six years later, the image creates more controversy than ever before, with good reason.
The album itself is hard rock at its strongest roots, as the Scorpions had themselves their first idiosyncratic hit. Virgin Killer is a cut-the-crap straightforward heavyrock album with sonic zoom rushes of guitar theatrics. The complexities of their old style eliminated to where everything is was intended to be accessible. This worked well, as the band reached recognition outside of Europe and the album spread to even marking across the Japanese music charts.
The title track is just as riveting as the album cover. The introduction screeches into play like a panther screeching on a hot summer day, and then it rolls into a fierce storm of a mega hit worthy rock epic. As for other rocking jams, "Polar Nights" and "Hell Cat" are exploding to the forefront; songs you can get the feel for in a single listen. The rest of the album is raw, revolting; exactly what makes it great, and only great. The last of the record is standard formula, with curdling guitar licks as well as melodic guitar invention, almost a back and forth on the same songs that throws you in and out of the music. At times the band seems to be thrashing notes out of key as if it were still part of the music. Lead vocalist Klaus Meine is akin to AC/DC’s Bon Scott, but only if he had lost his signature voice and decided to actually sing and not scowl. It's a good thing Meine is a convincing singer, because Scorpions wouldn't have gone very far otherwise. A perfect example of this is the opening number "Pictured Life", a virtually ideal example of everything the Scorpions have been acclaimed for, their resonance, harmony and hard rock image that has so favorably harnessed their influence.
"In Your Park" and "Crying Days" are the only things close to ballads, and it's almost an insult to describe them as such. Although not implicit with their heartfelt emotion, the hardrock feeling is almost at war with itself. The mood isn't depressive but rather more of a celebration, not generally something you would expect. "Catch Your Train" and "Backstage Queen" are heavy classics in their own rite. Virgin Killer is certainly worth its replay value, which is almost impossible to say for many other hard rock albums from the mid or early '70s. If you've looking for a solid classic rock album to jam to, this album sincerely works.
