JUST ROLLIN' WITH JOHNNY OLENN LP !! on Liberty (original mono turquoise label) (LRP-3029) 1956. Who can forget the guy in the red suit early on in the movie 'The Girl Can't Help It' wailing away on the songs 'My Idea Of Love' and 'I Ain't Gonna Cry No More'. This is was his first and last album after his movie appearance. Some say it was pressed in 1957. Either way, it's almost 50 years old. It was his only LP which was never widely reissued commercially. The music is fantastic 50's rock and roll with a definate rock 'a' billy sound to it, just try to keep your feet still.
Johnny Olenn (McCord, this is his complete real name), was born on December 16, 1936 in San Antonio, Texas, where he later was raised and grew up with friends like Doug Sahm, (of the today's popular Texas Tornados). As a musician he started his career in the early fifties, by playing stand-up bass in the western band of Eddie Dugosh. Later on he switched to the steel guitar and Rudy "Tutti" Grayzel, joined the band and became their stand-up bass player. 

In 1954 he quit high school and stopped working in the western band of Eddie just to form his own band "The Jokers", who consisted of Cullen Offer - sax, Jerry Carnes - drums, Bobby Gene Baker - bass and Greg Nanus - piano, while Johnny himself did the vocals and lead guitar. Beside all these instruments he already played, he also plays the drums and the trumpet! After a year of playing around they got a steady engagement at the Tiffany Lounge club in San Antonio, this was in 1955 where they stayed for about 6 months.

Also in 1955 they had their first records released on Roy Tanner's T N T label. Recorded and released that year were: "Candy Kisses", Blues Stay Away From Me", "Sally Let Your Bangs Hang Down" and "I Ain't Gonna Cry No More". "Candy Kisses" and "Sally Let Your Bangs Hang Down" are different versions of the later in 1956 recorded Liberty versions.

Major Riddle, owner of the Dunes Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada, discovered them in 1956 and offered Johnny Olenn & and Jokers a contract for 2 weeks. But, because of their tremendous success this was extended into 26 weeks. That same year they were also featured in the now classic rock 'n' roll movie "The Girl Can't Help It", a 20th Century-Fox release, in which they did perform the songs "My Idea Of Love" and "I Ain't Gonna Cry No More". Their new sax player then had become Jay Orlando who performs in this movie.

This performance in the movie led them to a contract with Liberty Records, on which was released that great and today rare album "Just Rollin' With Johnny Olenn"! During their stay in Hollywood for "The Girl Can't Help It", they met Elvis Presley who was at that time in Hollywood shooting his movie "Love Me Tender" and they became good friends and would meet again a lot of times in the sixties in Las Vegas.

Now the cover, which still has a nice sheen to it, does have a small split on the lower back spine, about 2 inches, and there is tape along the bottom, I got it this way many years ago, and of course left it alone, there is $5.00 written in ink on the upper right side back, that's what I paid for it, the vinyl is at least in very good+ condition, some very minor lines, I don't consider them scratches as they are just not deep enough, the sound is very good with minor ticks here and there, no loud pops, and it definately doesn't skip!!!!

This is not a business, it is not a record store, even though I have far more rare records than any store could imagine, they are all mine, which I have collected since 1960, I collected records like some people collect baseball cards, but now find myself surrounded by thousands of records, and they must all go!!!!!

Please note shipping costs, I use Priority and Global Priority for the simple reason that the faster the item gets to you, the less risk of loss or damage to the item, there are countries that do not except Global Priority and I will adjust the price accordingly, if you really want to save a few dollars on shipping, I will do this for you, but please just be aware of the risks involved, if you have any questions, please ask before bidding.

Grading Definitions:

Mint (M): Absolutely perfect in every way - never played, possibly sealed. (Mint grading used sparingly if at all)
Near Mint (NM or M-): Near Mint is the highest grade listed in all Goldmine guides. Many dealers won't give a grade higher than this, implying (perhaps correctly) that no record is ever truly perfect. The record shows no obvious signs of wear. Lp should look new, just purchased. No creases, folds, seam splits or visual defects.

Very Good Plus (VG +): Very Good Plus will show signs that it was played, and otherwise handled by a previous owner who took good care of it. Record surfaces may show slight signs of wear and may have scuffs or light scratches that don't affect one's listening experience. (Slight warps that do not affect the sound are OK) NOTE: None of my records are warped!!!!!

Very Good (VG): Many of the defects found in VG + will be more pronounced on a VG disc. Surface noise will be evident upon playing, especially in soft passages and during intros and fades, but will not overpower the music otherwise. Groove wear will start to be noticeable, as with light scratches that will affect the sound. This is the lowest price grade used by Goldmine listings, no need to go any lower than Very Good (VG) I won't sell it if it's not at least Very Good!

Please remember, these are records and not cds, and even a mint copy of a record will have a minimal amount of surface noise, the more +++ after very good, the closer the record is to near mint, I don't think any record is mint unless it is still sealed, and even in that case, there are some manufacturers who have poor quality vinyl, I'll try to indicate this when I can, I won't try to rip you off, I will do my very best to give you an accurate description, and will do my very best to assist you in any way I can, I want you to have a pleasant experience and that is my main goal, so have fun, and please, ask me any questions you may have before you bid, I'll try to give you all the info I can! - THE DROOGSTER
