Description

Here's a really incredible RADIO PROGRAM TRANSCRIPTON DISC for the two episodes of the syndicated 1940s NBC children's fantasy series: "HAPPY THE HUMBUG".  This amusing long-forgotten 15-minute program features a fantastic array of make-believe characters living in the woods, featuring some familiar radio voices.  The series was adapted from a comic strip of the same name created by STEVEN CARLIN, who would later create ROOTIE KAZOOTIE for television and went on to produce THE $64,000 QUESTION, JACKIE GLEASON and other popular shows.

The program features the adventures of HAPPY THE HUMBUG, a real-live humbug boy of six years old.  As described in the show, he has a monkey's tail, a turtle's back and a giraffe's neck.  His best friend is HUNKY, the Monkey with the blue serge pants.  Guided by the beautiful LADY FAIR and the wise PINK ELEPHANT (who cries delicious strawberry tears), Happy and Hunky encounter THE COCK and THE BULL (who, of course, tell cock-and-bull stories) and the villainous BUM STEER.  No actors are identified, but the Pink Elephant sounds like JACKSON BECK and Hunky sounds like ARNOLD STANG or STAN FREBERG.

This vintage 16" RADIO TRANSCRIPTION DISC is an original NBC syndication disc, issued to radio stations.  The show was produced sometime between 1946 and 1948.  Each side of this single disc offers a complete program, and they are identified as Program 12 and Program 16.

  • Program #12 was to air on Christmas Day.  Happy, who was born without parents so he never before gotten a Christmas present, is excited to learn that the Pink Elephant has promised to bring him one.  He's delighted to learn that the Pink Elephant has given him a new mother and father.  Strawberry tears flow in abundance, and Christmas prayers of thanks are given.
  • Program #16 picks up the story, taking time to introduce every character in the cast.  After the introductions, the Pink Elephant asks Happy and Hunky to search for an animal called a Dilemna, who eats only goldenrod and has hay fever.  They are to remove his horns (horns of a dilemna - get it?) and return with them.  The Dilemna will immediately grow a new pair, so no harm is done.

The disc is clean and uncracked; the labels have no handwriting on them.  The recordings in great condition.  This was from a group of syndication and audition discs sent to a local businessman to consider sponsorship.  Unlike most syndication discs, this shows very little use.  Complete openings and closings.

See scans of the labels for both sides, plus the disc.  There are no skips and no scratches.  Few episodes of this program survive.

Will ship in sturdy packing...excessive shipping costs will be rebated via paypal for multiple purchases.
