Description

PLEASE READ BEFORE BIDDING: Please read the entire auction listing, including shipping costs, before writing to ask a question.   OUR GOAL IS CUSTOMER SATISFACTION. In order to meet that goal, we will ALWAYS work with our customers on any concerns that may arise. In the unlikely instance that you feel the need to open a resolution dispute before working with us, you will immediately be blocked from any further chance to acquire the rare music we present each and every week.   Payment is required within seven days. We mail all paid items ONE WEEK after auctions end. Please keep in mind our listings are time consuming in detail and we are often traveling to find these gems, which at times delays the delivery schedule by a day or two. We ALWAYS process and ship every paid order. We have no control over parcels once they are mailed from our local Post Office.Overseas mail to some countries (Italy, Russia, France, in particular) has became very slow. Opening a dispute for slow mail is unacceptable and will result in blocking the bidder. We work hard to provide excellent service as is represented by our 8000 plus positive feedback.   We use a VPI machine and thoroughly clean all records. Each order is carefully packaged by removing the LP from the jacket to avoid seam splits, use of 3 ml plastic cover sleeves over each LP and jacket, cardboard pad inserts, and placed in sturdy record mailers for safe delivery.   We take Customer Service seriously, and want you to be satisfied. Please give us 5 stars in each category through the feedback system, and we will be able to effectively continue to fulfill your passion for rare and collectible music! CLEAN COLLECTION COPY ! see full description details below....

RARE highly collectible Original 1971 BRITISH first pressing on the sought after orange/white & plum Atlantic label ...the 2nd YES album ... who, at this point were not yet the mass commercial success, but, gathering a large steady following by progressive fans with their finger on the happening scene button back in 1971 ...

Completely different cover to the boring design released in the USA...this UK cover wouldn't have gotten by the USA censors back in '71...

INCLUDES the elusive printed LYRICS insert ... complete issue as released in England, 1971

This is the confusing album that features a group photo on this American release that includes Steve Howe, who wasn’t actually hired until after the studio tracks had been recorded with Peter Banks on guitar.

The two most striking sounds right from the opening strains of this album are the strong string arrangements (which did not appear on the band’s debut album), and the very muddy organ sound. The strings are a welcome addition, and the organ aside, the second Yes album is a pretty large step forward for the band.

Bill Bruford’s drumming is even stronger than on the first album, and Peter Banks does a masterful job of laying down some very progressive guitar chords at a time when most major rock bands of the day were either recycling Beatles-like pop or veering off into blues-driven psychedelia. In America at least this stuff really was close to the edge.

The second track “Then” is dominated by Tony Kaye’s heavy keyboards and accented a bit with background spice. This is another fast-paced borderline psychedelic offering that slowly winds down to silence.

The strings return in a lush arrangement on “Everydays”, a slow-building number written by Stephen Stills that works up to a ear-bending guitar-and-keyboard extended instrumental that is flat-out incomparable to anything else being recorded at the time.

“Sweet Dreams” There weren’t any singles from this album (not in the States anyway). The song has many trademarks of the classic Yes period, particularly Anderson’s soaring and gender- defying vocals and Bruford’s prominent but unpredictable drums.

A jazzy “The Prophet” follows, one of the first of Anderson’s mystic, extended story- songs  with the strings and atmospheric brass , followed by the brief interlude “Clear Days”.

Finally come the much better-known “Astral Traveller” and the title track. Both feature the strident keyboards and Anderson’s staccato vocals that would be so prominent throughout the 70s. The extended instrumental passages of keyboards, Chris Squire’s very prominent bass, and Bank’s guitar were almost surreal to mainstream listeners at the time. Of the two songs much prefered, “Time and a Word” with a memorable repetitive refrain and the way the backing arrangements seem to lift the vocals atop the music toward the end. A beautiful song and by far the most memorable on the album.

Like their first Lp, this is a very good album...
