RARE CHINESE 78 RPM RECORD Columbia Phonograph Co one-sided +sticker 1896 1901/2 Shipping Info Description &since CHINESE ONE-SIDED 78 RPM RECORD: One of the oldest and rarest 78 rpm records, and a very early (if not the first) Chinese recording. Several of these have sold at auction in the past three years, for $450-$600, and none of them had the original illustrated advertising sticker/label on the blank side. The red label has many Chinese characters on it, along with “Columbia Phonograph Co.”, “1271D”, and “Patented May 4 1886 and Dec. 10, 1901”. Stamped in the matrix is “Patented Nov. 25, 1902” and “1271/D1”. On the reverse is a circular imprint/stamp and the number “405”, and the original Columbia Phonograph Co. illustrated label showing “Where Graphophones and Columbia Records are made”; also states: Factory American Graphophone Company, Bridgeport, Conn.” The spindle hole has some bad chipping - the label side has chipping beneath the hole with some scarring to the label in that area, and the reverse has some chipping above the hole – since the hole still has half of its original edge, the spindle still fits and the record still plays (it is a rough recording, maybe a field recording, of a woman singing with a stringed instrument playing the background); the label also has several concentric-circle needle-scratches that don’t scar the lettering too much; the label on the reverse has only some minimal scuffing. The record has minor to moderate scuffing and a few minor scratches, but plays through with some popping. Good.
