German 1961 issue of Tony Sheridan and The Beat Brothers (Beatles) single
A side - My Bonnie 24 673 A
B side - The Saints 24 673 B
In Very Good condition
Hairlines and scuffs but no major scratches.
Label is clean and unmarked but very slightly faded with age.
Sleeve also in very good condition but has handwritten number on one side (see photos) and 3cm side split onone side
The single with the slow German introduction to "My Bonnie" is theBeatles' first commercial record release ever.
The Beatles met Tony Sheridan during their first Hamburg trip in 1960,though they didn't perform together. The next year, however, saw them alternating with Sheridan's band, and occasionally backing him.Following one of these performances, a friend of orchestral leader Bert Kaempfert - also an agent for the Polydor label - recommended them fora recording session.
The sessions probably took place on 22th. and 23th. June 1961, on aschool stage at Hamburg's Friedrich-Ebert-Halle school. The Beatles' fee was 300 marks. A number of songs were recorded, including MyBonnie, which Polydor chose to release as a single in Germany. The B-side was The Saints, a beat version of When The Saints Go Marching In.
The single, credited to Tony Sheridan and The Beat Brothers, wasreleased on 23th.October 1961*, and reached number five in the Germancharts.
With The Beatles' fan base growing in Liverpool, demand grew forimported copies of My Bonnie. The buzz around the single inspired Brian Epstein to seek out the group, which he went on to manage.
"GEMA**/BIEM***" :a marking that indicates what company is responsiblefor the copyright payments for the material released on the record to the proper publishers. It is important to remember that a record withthe above-mentioned marking isn't necessarily made in Germany but which was intended for sale in Germany.
*23th October 1961=According to information in Polygram, Hamburgdocument, the single was officially released in Germany on 23th October 1961. However, as has been pointed out earlier, there are information that indicates that here were copies of this singleavailable as early as in August 1961.
StrictlyGraded Using RECORD COLLECTOR Grading System
Grading System: I have used Record Collector magazine set of standards for the condition of second-hand records, I have added a (+) or (-)to my gradings where applicable.
MINT: The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint.
(NOTE: As far as I am concerned MINT will almost never apply to second hand vinyl records).
EXCELLENT: The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.
VERY GOOD: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tearon the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.
GOOD: The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion andmild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges,spine splits, discoloration, etc.
FAIR: The record is still just playable buthas not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump. The cover and contents will be torn, stained and/or defaced.
POOR: The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.
BAD: The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection-filler.
I try to grade all records in accordance with the Rare Record Price Guide (see above). However if you feel I have graded your record incorrectly please email me ASAP so we can resolve the problem amicably.
Packaging - I try to recycle all boxes and packaging so you may get your goods in a usedcard board container. All vinyl records are sent by ‘Signed For’ using two corrugated cardboard stiffeners.
