This auction is for a very rare and highly collectible DECCA contract pressing of the Beatles debut LP 'Please Please Me' on the Parlophone label.

When 'With the Beatles' was release at the end of 1963 the album it knocked from the number 1 spot was Please Please Me. So EMI had this overwhelming demand not only for the huge sales of the Beatles' debut album, but also their follow-up album. It's my opinion that this demand got so great at the end of 1963 that EMI contracted Decca to press a number of copies to keep on top of this demand. I believe that Decca were contracted to run off a quantity of both Please Please Me and With The Beatles album at this time. This would explain why it's easier to find With The Beatles with the Decca ring than Please Please Me, as by then demand for their debut album was waning and selling far fewer copies by this point.

It's very easy to spot a Decca contract pressing of Please Please Me as it features the very prominent Decca 'ring' and also the smaller 'polo' sized inner indentation.

Make no mistake - Decca only ever ran off a very tiny percentage of Please Please Me albums and, today, are extremely rare and incredibly difficult to find! This is a very respectible condition copy and usually they turn up completely trashed from 50+ years of constant play and usage.

Would look great in any Beatles collection!

If you're after the Decca pressing of With The Beatles, I also have that currently listed for sale.

The Cover : VG

The cover is holding up okay but is showing its age a little. It's looking pretty good though as these covers generally have not really survived the last 50+ years. The front has a nice colour to it with a little dirt buildup on the laminate. The top border has creamed slightly and 'Keith' has been indented in next to the 'Mono'. There's a fair amount light little creases running around the edges and in the corners. Top seam is okay but has a little wear in the middle. No split. The bottom seam has some creases running through it but has not split or torn. The spine is legible but has a number of creases running through it that have caused a little damage. The back cover has browned and you can see some disc impression and light ringwear. Creases around the edges and some wear down the mouth edge. Overall, not too bad - you usually find them a lot worse than this - but is showing its age a little.   Inner Sleeve: VG+
Click on an image to enlarge it.
The original plastic-lined inner sleeve is included. It's browned a little and has some creases in the corners and a little wear at the mouth. But there's no splits or tears and the plastic bag is stuck tightly in where it's supposed to be.   Disc (Visually Graded Only!!) : VG

The playing surface has a very nice, clean shine to it which, overall, just has some light scuffs and marks in places. It does two slightly heavier marks on side 1 which I'll go into - There's a light scratch that runs through tracks 3 and 4 at 8 o'clock which I can just about feel under my fingernail. Would probably cause a light click during play. From track 2 to the deadwax there's a light, wispy scratch which is predominantly unfeelable under the fingernail bar where it ends in the deadwax - feels cosmetic and I doubt would cause disruption to playback. These discs usually turn up completely trashed, so this is a pretty decent example of this very rare record!

Labels : VG+/EX-

The labels are clean with bright, silvert text. There's some light wear in spots and a couple of little tears on the side 1 label as you can see. There's some light spindlewear and a little whitening around the centreholes. Overall, though, the labels are looking pretty decent!.
