”Alice Babette Toklas met Gertrude Stein in 1907, the day she arrived in Paris. They remained together for 39 years until Stein’s death in 1946. While Stein became the center of the avant-garde art world, hosting an exclusive salon that welcomed the likes of Ernest Hemingway, Pablo Picasso, James Joyce, Ezra Pound and F. Scott Fitzgerald, Toklas largely preferred to stay in Stein’s shadow, serving as her secretary, editor and assistant.

That changed in 1933 when Stein wrote The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas a retelling of the couple’s life together with Toklas serving as narrator. The book is Stein’s most accessible and best-selling work. It also turned the shy, self-effacing Toklas into a literary figure.

After Stein’s death, Toklas published The Alice B. Toklas Cookbook in 1954, which combined personal recollections of her time with Stein along with recipes and musings about French cuisine. Yet it wasn’t her stories about tending to the wounded during WWI or her opinions on mussels that made the book famous. Instead, it was the inclusion of a recipe given to her by Moroccan-based artist Brion Gysin called “Hashish Fudge.”

This is a really cool album and you will not find one any time soon in this condition! From my research I have found that these copies do not pop up very often and when they do, they are usually in pretty rough shape.

Cover looks EXCELLENT with no splitting. Record has some light scratches and what looks more like a smudge across bottom of side B but none of these look like they would affect playback. They can be seen only in the light and cannot be felt. Please examine all photos carefully and read entire description below for details on where these records came from. May help with condition details....

I have 3 or 4 Gertrude Stein Albums in great condition and may try and get those up this week as well. I will combine shipping.

This record is one of many from a retired sound engineer turned radio station DJ’s private classical record collection mostly from the Golden Era of classical music. This collection is mainly geared toward the piano but literally has a little bit of everything.

I recently purchased the entire collection from the family of the original owner (he is 97 years old) and will be listing everything in it over the next few months. I tried listing it as one large lot but have since decided to break it up.

This huge collection consists of mainly classical golden era works, but also has some jazz records, poetry reads, Shakespeare, French recordings from his time spent in Paris ( 1950’s), over 100 box sets, over 700 singles, album books with the most rare and valuable lp’s archived and stored within them, shellac 78’s, 10 inch and 12 inch records, over 40 promos and radio station copies, very old and then also more modern music scores, and much much more!!

The original owner took great care of his collection and I was told that he was the only owner of the majority of these albums until now with myself as the second owner.

All conditions present in this collection however most are in EXCELLENT, NEAR MINT or MINT (still sealed) condition with a few in VG+ condition and a handful in the remaining. The previous owner notated on particular albums that had playback noise, and/or did not sound good even notating the exact timing of sound imperfections on a few of them. It’s a good sign when there is no writing present.

After buying his records, he would tape them onto a reel player and then archive the vinyl. It is literally like visiting a record shop with new 40 - 70 year old records! I have thoroughly enjoyed researching and learning about each and every one of them and on the subject of classical records/music as a whole. Discogs is a godsend!

I am not going to attempt to clean or test/play any of the records as I do not have the right equipment and do not want to inadvertently cause damage. I am also not going to attempt to visually grade any of these as I do not want to mislead anyone by saying the wrong thing, accidentally over-grading or under-grading. I am not by any means an expert on the subject and am just an eBay seller who buys and resells interesting items. I also own a steel building business owner and am about to launch my buildings on eBay very soon!

So, instead of attempting to grade, I will take as many photos as possible from multiple angles using good lighting. I will describe each of them to the best of my ability including pointing out any imperfections that I spot. However, the photos will tell the story better than I ever could so please be sure to examine ALL photos very very carefully and please do not hesitate to ask any questions.
