Rare, hard to find British collectible on the old (UK) Spark label...the very first & legendary collectible by the mighty KILLING FLOOR, recorded in 1969 ... their first of two great albums...

KILLING FLOOR were one of the original British blues rock bands, part of the "Blues Boom" of the 1960s, and contemporaries of bands such as FREE and BLACK SABBATH. The band toured with Texas blues legend FREDDIE KING and released two albums "KILLING FLOOR" and "OUT OF URANUS" which have both become cult classics.

KILLING FLOOR came together in 1968 when singer BILL THORNDYCRAFT and guitarist MICK CLARKE met up in a South London blues band. After one unsatisfactory gig with the band the two decided to form a new unit together...Bill suggested the name KILLING FLOOR.

Bill had already met drummer BAZZ SMITH while touring in Germany, and ads in the "Melody Maker" music paper brought responses from bass player STUART (MAC) McDONALD and pianist LOU MARTIN.

The band rehearsed hard in various South London pubs and rehearsal rooms, learning a repertoire of Chicago blues standards, but adding their own rock influences. Their first live performance was at London's "Middle Earth" with Captain Beefheart, and soon the band was playing at all the blues clubs of the time, including appearances at London's Marquee club with The Nice and Yes. Favourite venues included the Blues Loft in High Wycombe where they literally brought the house down..the footstomping of the crowd bringing down the ceiling in the room below!

With their blues orientation and the buying public's sudden addiction to the genre, you would have thought a major label would've jumped at a chance to sign them. It didn't happen. Attempts to attract major labels were all failures, leaving the band to eventually sign with the newly formed Spark Records (manager Edwards had a publishing deal with the company starting the label). Signed by Spark (London's newly formed Sire label acquiring American distribution rights), the quintet made their recording debut with 1969's Edwards produced "Killing Floor". Musically material such as "Nobody By My Side", "Come Home Baby" and "Bedtime Blues" was straight-forward but meaty & raw English blues. Thornycroft had a nicely ragged voice that was well suited to the genre. Keyboard player Martin (check out the harpsichord instrumental "Sunday Morning") and guitarist Clarke were both major talents.  Anyone into John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers, or early Fleetwood Mac will certainly take a shine to the LP.

CONDITION: The cover has only small light wear that was starting, not bad at all, a keeper under the (rare) circumstances (see photo!)  with solid seams. VG+(+) collectible

The vinyl is on dark transparent red vinyl has superficial light scuffs and 3 or 4 very short stylus marks, visual VG and playgraded very well with only some light ticks, most all was without distraction, VG++, enjoyable

       

      A cool addition to anyone's music library!
