DESCRIPTION: I had to remove some wrong information I got on this group from a supposed expert on doo-wop groups! In his article on Google, he said this was Len Barry's first recording and that he sang lead on it. I thought that was strange, since Barry was white and his voice sounded definitely black. Well, my hunch was right. I just received an e-mail from an alert reader who set me straight. He said that the lead's name was Lee Chapman, who was a black classmate of the rest of the group. I'm very sorry for giving all you wonderful people wrong information, but when you read something that is supposed to be by an expert, what can you do?!!! It just goes to show that you can't believe everything you read on Google!
Moptity Mope is a classic song now, and if you've never heard it and love oddball doo-wops, this is the one for you! The flip side of this record, Wing of an Angel is based on the old melodramatic turn-of-the-century song, If I Had the Wings of an Angel, but was modernized and turned into a love ballad. Now, how about that for ingenuity?! It is amazingly a beautiful ballad. Whether Barry sang the lead on these songs is really meaningless. The record is absolutely fabulous! Incidentally, according to a reference book I own, this is the original rare copy of the record. Here is what "Rockin' Records" says about it: "Despite higher selection number, this seems to be the first pressing. Certainly copies of [Boss] 401 with 'Dist. Nationally - Ember' are later issues. Each has a differently spelled title and artist." (Boss 401 lists the artists as the Boss-Tones (notice the hyphenated name) with the title spelled "Mope-itty Mope"; and the record up for auction, Boss 501, lists the artists as one unhyphenated word with the title spelled "Moptity-Mope.") Now's the time to buy this great and rare, super doo-wop record! Buy it now!
