Nostalgia returns to those of us who were kiddies of the 40's, as the beloved children's radio host by "Uncle Don" is once again heard reciting nursery rhymes, accompanied by his basic piano accompaniment on this highly collectible and sought after albums with a return to those years of innocence. Up for auction is an extremely rare complete 3 record vinyl 78 rpm 10 inch copy in excellent condition of the Uncle Don Play Land Children's stories, released by Sonora Records in 1944. This collection consists of 35 Children's Musical Stories for Children. The cherished radio host and performer, Don Carney, had become an Urban Legend in the making already during his radio broadcasting years. The most popular children's radio program of that era aired from 1928 to 1947, with a half hour program broadcast daily, six days a week to over 5 million children, due to the powerful 50,000 watt range of on WOR Radio in New York! When rumors surfaced that utterance of the words, "There, that oughta hold the little bastards!" was allegedly accidently captured on the air in the early 30's as Uncle Don was signing off.. way back then, the poor guy was haunted by these rumors, evidently false, for the rest of his life! Despite the fact that was no evidence of any kind that Don Carney was ever penalized for anything he said as an on-air personality, questions still arise. This urban legend of his alleged infamous quip has persisted through these seventy years via various ways, including a series of popular Blooper records that rekindled public awareness of the legend.
This valuable collection consists actually of 6 albums recorded on both sides of collectible 3 analog 78 rpm 10 inch discs, all in amazing condition. See photos. The cover itself is very collectible and features a multicolored Sonora label different from their others, this Sonora Playland version, is based on the style of the Wizard of Oz books. Interestingly, the cover art did not mention Uncle Don, as did the spine, due to the newly licensed Sonora Records reusing a cover off of a prior album for the new recordings. This album collection was produced during the first year of Sonora making their own records, in 1944 and they evidently had access to scarce shellac and some of the best pressing plants of the difficult period of record manufacturing era. These early pressings are considered to be better than those pressed in the following years.
