PLEASE READ BEFORE BIDDING: Please read the entire auction listing, including shipping costs, before writing to ask a question. OUR GOAL IS CUSTOMER SATISFACTION. In order to meet that goal, we will ALWAYS work with our customers on any concerns that may arise. In the unlikely instance that you feel the need to open a resolution dispute before working with us, you will immediately be blocked from any further chance to acquire the rare music we present each and every week. Payment is required within seven days. We mail all paid items ONE WEEK after auctions end. Please keep in mind our listings are time consuming in detail and we are often traveling to find these gems, which at times delays the delivery schedule by a day or two. We ALWAYS process and ship every paid order. We have no control over parcels once they are mailed from our local Post Office.Overseas mail to some countries (Italy, Russia, France, in particular) has become very slow. Opening a dispute for slow mail is unacceptable and will result in blocking the bidder. We work hard to provide excellent service as is represented by our 8000 plus positive feedback. We use a VPI machine and thoroughly clean all records. Each order is carefully packaged by removing the LP from the jacket to avoid seam splits, use of 3 ml plastic cover sleeves over each LP and jacket, cardboard pad inserts, and placed in sturdy record mailers for safe delivery. We take Customer Service seriously, and want you to be satisfied. Please give us 5 stars in each category through the feedback system, and we will be able to effectively continue to fulfill your passion for rare and collectible music! We have served thousands of satisfied customers - far more than our feedback records indicate - and our aim is to continue to do so. Formed in the fall of 1968, Skin Alley turned professional when they signed to Clearwater Productions as managers (whom also handled High Tide, The Trees and Hawkwind), on word from an ex-member that was now in the company. Gigging around regularly for free (concerts organized by their management firm) in order to find a following, this West-London quartet developed a different kind of rock that drew much from progressive and blues. Built around keyboardist Juskiewicz and part-time guitarist, and flute player Bob James, Skin Alley had a distinctive sound, which made them stand out at the many free concerts they played. Having been spotted by the legendary John Peel, they recorded a BBC session for the Top Gear programme, which in the short term landed them a recording contract with the English branch of CBS. Recorded in November of that year, the LP was released in March 1970. The critical acclaim and encouraging sales lead CBS to allow Skin Alley (who lost bassist Crimble during the recording and was replaced by ex-Atomic Rooster bassist Nick Graham) to release a second album, From Pagham And Beyond, later that same year.
The Second album from this West London group released the same year as their debut LP on the same CBS label. Apparently the sessions of To Pagham and Beyond suffered from some band unrest: bassist Crimble left in the course of recording (headed for Hawkwind) and was replaced by ex-Atomic Rooster bassist-singer Nick Graham (an important reinforcement for Skin Alley), but CBS was cutting costs and Skin Alley were dropped from the roster soon after this 2nd Lp's release. The Skin Alley sound remained relatively intact from the first album and all tracks are 7 minutes or longer, bar the closer (clocking at 5.5 minutes) in the spirit of hippie festival bands of the era.
Right from the opening of Big Brother, you'll find the same progressive direction (even if the vocals don't sound like Cressida anymore), and the tune is pleasant with a cool slow keyboard mid-section crescendoing back to the groove. Starting on Bob James's superb whirling flute (often rightly compared to Ian Anderson, but never wild and saturated), Leader's Daughter is a superb 9-mins progressive-grooved track with Juskiewicz's keys twirling all over and James' reeds, a bit reminiscent of Van der Graaf Genorators's David Jackson. Next is a take on Graham Bond's Walking In The Park, compared to Colosseum's complex version.
Queen of Bad Intention starts the 2nd side on an organ line with a sturdy and steady beat, a fiery guitar solo hovering over a Hammond organ-driven rock and a very proggy finale lead by the keyboard. Followed by the 8-minute Sweaty Betty (one of two tracks sung by newcomer Nick Graham, but written by the departing Crimble) and the track settles into a groove taking a prop-rock twist (Graham also plays wind instruments), including dominate percussion from Giles Pope. The closing Easy To Lie again has prog-rock feel (Graham, James and Justie on woods), and strangely recorded ...
All said, a very worthy album...The group did not record its next album until 1972 after changing drummer and finding a new recording contract. If you like their first, this one is well in its line....
