RARE ...Original 1970 first pressing UK only SECOND LP in gatefold cover::::

Easily the hardest-to-find of BLACK WIDOW albums. Released after their debut "SACRICE" -- it has been said that that Black Widow became commercial after "Sacrifice" but that is not true when you hear this album. Dark, mysterious and the last to include Jim Gannon on guitar. Highlighted by tracks like "Mary Clark", "Legend Of Creation", "Tears And Wine" are filled with murky moody atmosphere's containing the 'right sound', organ/guitar interplay...   Black Widow, then, is an album of some interest to progressive rock fans - especially those keen on the Hammond organ-driven grooves of the early seventies, and...where it gets interesting, it does get REALLY interesting.
Tears and Wine is a Hammond organ-riff driven heavy rock track stemming, as so many early 1970s hard rock bands did, from the sound of Spooky Tooth. Despite the near 9-minute timing, and two riffs trade places throughout to create a song with a couple of sixties-flavoured instrumental sections over a third riff; To kick the song off is a bluesy riff, with flavours of Cream based on a descending motif. A new idea gives a funky edge to the verses which are topped with bluesy singing and the ever-present Hammond organ. The bass puts in a nice walking style. The third riff starts a bit cheesey, but jumps into a second section which is broken down nicely and followed by the Spooky Tooth influence. The whole shooting match is repeated, then a new groove is introduced, which is extremely Small Faces in style, reminiscent of some of the music on "Ogden's Nut Gone" - the resemblance is so strong.
Elsewhere,"The Gypsy" - seems to be a strong Uriah Heep influence here - and some interesting fluttering flutes, along with the wah- wah guitar driven solo adding a nice flavour, all said, the flavours are enjoyable early progressive edges...   "Mary Clark" sounds like early 1970 styled heavy prog grooves. This is altogether more sinister than anything that's gone before - the contrasts between the verse and chorus sections are great, the bass drives well, and the stripping down of the music provides a real sense of urgency in the dramatic twists in the lyrics, which are surprisingly poignant and very dramatically delivered. Overall, this song has the feel of a late '60s psychedelic feel.   "Wait Until Tomorrow" is another surprise - it's more reminiscent of Hawkwind. The verses are worthy of comment too - almost spoken, they are delivered more than sung.   The grandiose-titled "Legend of Creation", begins along the lines of "In the Court Of Crimson King..." but twists into nice Hammond organ and bass work with an early Santana-esque moving groove.   Overall, the Lp contains increased use of Hammond organ, guitar & flute, from their "Sacrifice" Lp -- sounding in places like early Uriah Heep meeting ("Gallows Pole" styled) Led Zeppelin with progressive flourishes and underground rock mixes...
