PLEASE READ BEFORE BIDDING: Please read the entire auction listing, including shipping costs, before writing to ask a question. OUR GOAL IS CUSTOMER SATISFACTION. In order to meet that goal, we will ALWAYS work with our customers on any concerns that may arise. In the unlikely instance that you feel the need to open a resolution dispute before working with us, you will immediately be blocked from any further chance to acquire the rare music we present each and every week. Payment is required within seven days. We mail all paid items ONE WEEK after auctions end. Please keep in mind our listings are time consuming in detail and we are often traveling to find these gems, which at times delays the delivery schedule by a day or two. We ALWAYS process and ship every paid order. We have no control over parcels once they are mailed from our local Post Office. Overseas mail to some countries (Italy, Russia, France, in particular) has became very slow. Opening a dispute for slow mail is unacceptable and will result in blocking the bidder. We work hard to provide excellent service as is represented by our 8000 plus positive feedback. We use a VPI machine and thoroughly clean all records. Each order is carefully packaged by removing the LP from the jacket to avoid seam splits, use of 3 ml plastic cover sleeves over each LP and jacket, cardboard pad inserts, and placed in sturdy record mailers for safe delivery. We take Customer Service seriously, and want you to be satisfied. Original first print from September 1968 ... the UK only release by MAGIC MIXTURE as released on the UK Saga label. The LP goes more or less hand in hand with label mates FIVE DAY WEEK STRAW PEOPLE, although Magic Mixture is consistently a slightly better overall album...
One of the rarest and most pricey Saga Records albums, the Magic Mixture LP is quite pleasing psychedelia in the style of early trippy side of Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd. Basically has all the ingredients of the OPEN MIND, the crafted tunes are all highly memorable dominated by infectious melodies, pumping electric organ mixed with searing bursts of fuzz guitar in the right places. Has a solid classics UK underground sound, and by one listen you can easily see why this record is much prized in psych LP artifacts circles. 'Moonbeams' possibly being the LP highlight (though there are many) can be found on UK psychedelic compilations. However, we feel the best tracks are 'Living On A Hill', and "Moonbeams" like most tracks on the album, being well crafted melodic UK whimsy soaked in L.S.D. atmospherics breaking in with tasty freak-out instrumentation. Here are some crack overviews on the decidedly solid album:::
Kicked along by some hyperactive Melvyn Hacker bass, '(I'm So) Sad' opened the album with a glorious, lysergic soaked mid-tempo ballad. Wonderful melody with an even better Jim Thomas fuzz guitar solo made this track one of the album highlights.
A breezy, jazz-tinged ballad, 'Urge To Leave' showcased Thomas' overlooked talents as a lead guitarist. His opening solo served as a perfect example of a restrained, tasteful performance.
'You' found the band taking a stab at Cream-styled blues-rock. Built on Thomas Clapton-styled extended guitar vamp, his vocal seven sounded a bit like Jack Bruce. Not particularly original, but surprisingly nice.
Another acid-tinged ballad, 'Slowly the Day' spotlighted Thomas' instantly recognizable voice (you could clearly make the Charlie connection on this one). The song also featured one of Thomas' best guitar solos.
With Jack Collins' frenetic drums almost serving as the lead instrument, 'New Man' was side one's most commercial number. The song also found Thomas turning in a tasty Hendrix-styled solo.
Showcasing Stan Curtis' moody organ, 'Living On a Hill' found the band taking a stab at a West Coast-styled slice of psych. With another beautiful melody, this one underscored the band's strong vocal harmonies and a fantastic, slashing fuzz guitar solo from Thomas. One of my picks for standout performance.
Side two started out with another slice of Cream-styled blues-rock/psych. The lyric was trademarked 1967-68 psych nonsense with Thomas turning in another nice Jack Bruce impression. Hacker's bass line was great.
'Hey Little Girl ' is one of those albums you need to listen to on a good stereo system of a quality pair of headphones - the mix of Collins drums and Curtis keyboards literally explodes in your head. With a romping rhythm pattern, nifty swirling keyboards, and strange vocal arrangement the end result was a classic slice of Brit psych.
The stark ballad 'Hey Little Girl' could easily have been updated to fit into the Charlie catalog. Quite pretty and mainstream with commercial potential.
Built on Curtis' swirling organ and some strumming Thomas guitar, 'Tomorrow's Sun' was another moody ballad, though this time out the results were less inspired. Pretty, but this one simply never kicked into gear.
Apparently meant to display the band's sense of humor (it does sound like they had a good time recording this one), 'Motor Bike Song' was simply lost to the American sensibilities. The instrumentation is great though with "freak-out" middle break based on the Sir Douglas Quintet-styled organ flourishes.
Sounding like it was recorded by a stoned band who accidentally stumbled into an echo chamber rather than a recording studio, 'Moon Beam' was another album standout. With some excellent jangle rock lead guitar, Hacker's hypnotic bass, and Collins pounding drums, this one was instantly memorable.

CONDITION: The cover: rated: VG+ if only having moderate crinkles in the lamination from handling and creasing in lamination, though NOT with ring wear which is a plus when the cover appears to be fully "EX" (excellent) with outer protective plastic cover in place. There are no delete marks, no split seams, and no writing ... VERY collection worthy ...
The vinyl: Rated: visually near "EX" (excellent) plays delightfully M- all the way (tested!) thoroughly enjoyable - not revealing distracting surface problems ... both UK Saga labels are clean
