1967 *stereo* first pressing VINYL
THE GRASSROOTS
...USA - Dunhill DS-50011
Original 1967 first press VINYL in stereo, very rare to find and sought LP, these Grassroots having VERY LITTLE TO DO WITH 'THE GRASSROOTS' OF FAME --don't be confused by this band with distinct sound difference as well as completely different band members. The GRASSROOTS of 1967 were a hip 4-piece band who played on the happening Sunset Strip scene with 'now sound' bands like The Byrds, Love, Buffalo Springfield, and the like ...in fact the Grassroots of 1967 have a very catchy melodic style folkrock sound akin to '67 era BYRDS mixed with their own cool threads....These guys hit pay dirt when their surprising hit "Where Were You When i Needed You" took off on the local L.A. radio stations and branched out nationally, getting them this album contract. However the puppeteers of above, holding on to the bands strings, had clashes over music direction..these Grassroots didn't want a *pop* sound as the album suggests...no problem, the puppeteers fired the whole band and recruited a *new* grassroots...the one that had the big chart poprock hits of the early 70's ...two different Grassroot bands ...This first and only album by the *real* Grassroots is VERY scarce as the album didn't sell well and label production was low (i.e. not all that many made, and also due to the fact that the group was *fired* -- the label probably did only one production run, and stopped when the Grassroots were suddenly no more ... That is why you run into dealers that go by the *price guide* book, wanting $100+ for this Lp, the suggested going rate, due to its scarcity...
These Grassroots in '67 were one of the happening SUNSET STRIP hip folkrock & garage bands with a sound like early Buffalo Springfield meets The Byrds. Their first *hit* came from this album, "Where Were You When I Needed You" which still stands up well as does this album which contains the same sort of sound; catchy numbers with folk'n'roll strumming jangle guitar structures, good pleasant vocals & harmonies. They were the popular 'house band' at one of the hip Sunset Strip clubs, "The Trip" ....
40+ years later, here's a decent original up for offers -- never saw it around much, even in the sixties -- the first album by The Sunset Strip happening sounds of THE GRASSROOTS and their cool hit "Where Were You When I Needed You" ...
