Face to Face was released by The Kinks in 1966 and represented a major artistic breakthrough for Kinks' songwriter Ray Davies, the LP represents the first full flowering of Davies' use of narrative, observation, and wry social commentary in his songs. It heralded The Kinks' move away from the hard-driving rock and roll style of 1964-65, which had catapulted the group to international stardom. It was the first Kinks album consisting entirely of Ray Davies compositions, and was their first album recorded over several months, rather than in one concentrated session.
There are many reasons (many songs) why Ray Davies is a great songwriter. The main reason is best exemplified in Face To Face, not quite a concept album, but so on-the-line it ought to count.
Each song on Face To Face is its own little polished gem, a story or a feeling. You can really get lost in this album with its cast of characters. Face To Face is a miniature universe including some of the best songs the Kinks ever recorded.
The tunes aren’t about heavy things like relationships and love, or faith, or murder. They are about daily trifles, the things in life that we face so often: a phone call, a rainy day, a vacation, a house, or just lazing around on a sunny afternoon in the summertime. It’s got a great developed sound to it, with all the fuzz left over from their (superb) previous album, Kinks Kontroversy, but rounded out with some Mellotron and sound effects. This album kicks off the Kinks’ “golden age.” Produced by Shel Talmy, 1966's "Face To Face" was released in the face of personnel upheavals that saw bassist Peter Quaife tender his resignation forming the band Maple Oak (only to quickly reconsider and withdraw his paperwork). Initially brought in to cover for Quaife while he recovered from a broken ankle, former Mark IV bassist John Dalton subsequently found himself added as a permanent member of the lineup. With Ray again penning the majority of material (the sole exception, 'Party Line' was co-written by Ray and Dave), the set stood as a largely overlooked masterpiece. Chock full of wonderful songs, tracks such as 'Dandy', the harpsichord propelled 'Too Much On My Mind', 'Holiday In Waikiki' and 'Rainy Day In June' were innovative (the band incorporating sound effects into their catalog), insightful (the rocking 'House In the Country' found Ray delving into social commentary), clever and tuneful. A personal favorite, the fuzz guitar propelled 'I'll Remember' (should've been a massive hit). Elsewhere, released as a single, 'Sunny Afternoon' b/w 'I'm Not Like Everybody Else' (reprise catalog number 0497) went top-20, propelling the parent set to # 135.
