This auction is for an extremely rare, authentic STEREO copy of the American VeeJay LP 'The Beatles and Frank Ifield on Stage' with the 'Jolly What' cover!! Not only that, but the disc is in near-immaculate condition!!
Due to Capitol initially wanting nothing to do with the Beatles, producer George Martin went around smaller US labels trying to find out that would release their music. After searching he found VeeJay, a small gospel label, that took the group on. After the Beatles had become hugely successful VeeJay realised that they had a huge goldmine on their hands and mass-issued as much of their material as they could.
As the publishing rights expiration for the material was getting close to expiring, VeeJay decided to issue an album titled 'The Beatles and Frank Ifield on Stage' even though there were only 4 Beatle tracks on the 12 track album, and every track is a studio recording and not live as the title suggests.
This album was a pure cash-in attempt to try and reissue old Beatle recordings (that had already been issued on Introducing the Beatles version 1 and 2, Songs, Pictures and Stories, Beatles Vs. Four Seasons and the various VJ and Tollie singles) as a new album, a trick that a lot of people saw right through. As such, this album completely bombed in the charts and hardly sold at all!
Not only that, but this is the insanely rare STEREO pressing! Back in 1964 nobody bought stereo as they cost more than their mono counterparts, and stereo record players cost a lot more money to buy. Because of this only a tiny, tiny percentage of this album were pressed in stereo and, today, are incredibly hard to find! In fact, according to Bruce Spizer in his book about the Beatles on VeeJay, his research determined that the total sales figure (minus returned copies that were destroyed) of this stereo LP, in all 4 of its versions, were only 3,684 copies!!
The disc carries the 'Audiomatrix' stamp and the circled 'MR' machine stamp, indicating that this particular pressing came from the Monarch record Mfg. Co, California. The sleeve is dark purple (and not black like you see on fakes) and has the full spine print. The hand-etched matrix numbers have the S prefix at the end, indicating a stereo pressing.
This is a 100% authentic example of this highly collectible record!
Today this album is incredibly hard to find! Would look great in any Beatles collection!

The cover is showing your usual wear and tear but, overall, is holding up okay. The front cover is pretty clean but does have some light disc impression and ringwear (as you can see in the photo). There's some wear and rubbing around the edges and, down the mouth edge, there's some pen where it looks like a previous owner has coloured in some whitening and wear down the mouth edge. There are a couple of little crease lines with a slightly more noticeable crease ar the top right. The top seam has worn at each edge and in the middle but, judging by no light coming through when I look inside the sleeve, it doesn't appear to have split. same for the bottom seam which is showing more wear right along from spine to mouth. The spine has worn quite badly in the middle and has started to split a little. You can read the spinetext although there is wear over the catalogue number at the top. The back (which, interestingly, has a mono back slick glued on) has browned a little and has some light staining in places. There's some light creasing on the edges and some general wear and tear, but as you can see, it's looking okay. Overall, a nice example of the extremely rare sleeve! Inner Sleeve : VG+/EX- The original VeeJay red inner sleeve is included. It's very flat and looking really nice but the grade has come down a little as the sides and bottom have split a little in the middle. Otherwise, looking very nice! That isn't a typo! This disc is in a truly, truly remarkable condition. This disc sold so poorly back in 1964 that it's believed that under 4,000 copies ever got out into the public. How many of those, after 50 years, are now trashed, broken, lost or destroyed? This has got to be one of the nicest examples of this disc out there and, just looking at it, I can't quite believe just how good it looks! The disc has a beautifully crisp, sharp shine to it and a wonderully clear surface with just a few very light, very faint little scuffs here and there. This is a truly gorgeous disc and looks like it has been barely played at all!

The labels are looking immaculate! I don't think a needle has been anywhere near these labels, or at least if one has the disc has been placed very carefully over it! No wear or tear, no writing, no sticker marks, no spindlewear and no whitening whatsoever around the centrehole. Stellar labels!
