INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT APOLLO RECORDS

· Apollo Records was an independent record label operating in New York City from the 1940’s to the early 1960’s.

· Formed by Bess Berman and her husband Ike Berman, the label became known for early recordings of doo-wop, blues, and gospel artists, such as Mahalia Jackson.

· The founders were working at a record shop on 125th Street when they decided to start their own label, naming it after the nearby Apollo Theater.

o   Floyd Adams (lead), Howard Anderson (1st tenor), Roger Lee (2nd tenor), Larry ‘Spanky’ Carter (baritone), and Tucker Clark (bass). Adams, it was rumored, sang lead on the Inspirations’ ‘Raindrops.’

o   Group began in Harlem singing alongside many groups vying for girls and the attention of record company representatives. Received inadequate promotion, signed to Apollo.
