# HISTORIC G&T (Gramophone & Typewriter) 78 RPM – A. W. Werschbilowitsch ## 10" Single-Sided Shellac – David Popper: "Memory" – St. Petersburg Imperial Russian Court Cellist (c. 1904)
Up for auction is a exceptionally rare piece of early recorded string heritage: a 10-inch single-sided 78 RPM shellac record on the desirable black-and-gold **Gramophone Concert Record** "G&T" label (**The Gramophone and Typewriter Ltd.**), catalog number **G. C.-27883**.
Recorded in St. Petersburg for the Imperial Russian market and pressed in Hanover, Germany.
### Performer & Recording Details: * **Cellist:** **A. W. Werschbilowitsch** (Aleksandr Vladimirovich Verszhbilovich) – Credited as *"Solist of the Russian Emperor, ST. PETERSBURG."* Renowned principal cellist of the Imperial Mariinsky Theatre and close associate of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. * **Repertoire:** *„MEMORY“* (Composed by David Popper, Op. 64 No. 1) – Violoncello with piano accompaniment. * **Label Variant:** Gramophone & Typewriter Ltd. (G&T) text with pre-Nipper "Recording Angel" trade mark logo. * **Reverse:** Single-sided disc featuring the famous raised **"REPRODUCED IN HANOVER"** Angel trade mark molded directly into the shellac back.
### Technical Condition Report: * **Shellac Surface (Visual Grade):** Very Good (VG). Shows good original luster. Surface exhibits a few light surface scratches and faint handling marks typical of early 1900s shellac, but grooves remain deep and intact. Free of chips, hairlines, or cracks. * **Label:** Deep black paper label with brilliant gold lettering. Extremely clean with clear, legible text. * **Rear Surface:** Hanover "Angel Back" embossing is sharp and well-preserved.
