The scene for Randy Weston's Open House was the Five Spot Cafe in Manhattan. The time, a rather dreary Monday in the fall of the year, and the setting about as wild a scene as you will ever make.

The live performance recording was scheduled for that same evening, but Coleman Hawkins was somewhere high in the skies between Chicago and New York; Roy Haynes was taking a similar route through the sky from Boston, and Wilbur Little and his bass were last heard from in Washington, D.C. Finally, Melba Liston, hospitalized in California, had air-mailed her arrangements for the date - but they had not as yet been delivered.

At 9:30 p.m. the missing musicians began to gather - Hawkins and Haynes from their respective flights, Little from his train.

Shortly thereafter the missing arrangements were delivered, and a tall, rather relieved Randy Weston passed out the music. There was no rehearsal - very little warm-up.

·                          CONDITION:

·                          THE RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)         WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant).For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)         The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(c)         The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)         Stereo  pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its mono  counterpart. The mix is more graphic, the sound resolution more precise, and the channel separation (which does not exist on mono version) adds a whole new dimension to the music. Also, the stereo mixes are (by definition) somewhat different than on the mono version. We estimate that mono copies of this album outnumber stereo copies  by a ratio of at least 5:1.

(e)         Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                          THE COVER

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+(+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-       Cover has a partially split top seam (between 6 and 8 inches  /15 to 20 centimeters); This split seam was delicately taped by the previous owner with a piece of transparent scotch tape

-       Cover has a partially split bottom seam (between 4 and 6 inches  / 10 to 15 centimeters)

-       Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2.

-       Back cover has a small peel-off mark, probably from the careless removal of the price sticker (less than 1 square inch in size).

-       Cover has all four corners slightly worn / dinged (nothing significant)

-       Cover has some visible fraying/tattering on all three seams
