STRICT, CONSERVATIVE GOLDMINE Ratings

This is an advance, promotional copy, one of very few I've ever seen of this title. the only visual sign of this is the large Capitol promo punch. The label is the stock colorband, as was the case for Capitol in those days; they did not produce white labels for the promotional LPs for many years. If you are looking for a white label you just won't find one. The bonus here is the spectacular pressing! These very early runs were the brightest that Capitol produced. That is the way to hear Cipollina and Duncan in these extremely well recorded live-at-The Fillmore and live-in-the studio performances. (The power and clarity of Freiberg's bass is seriously enhanced as well.)

If the quintessential San Francisco Sound is defined by lengthy improvised guitarwork and near-telepathic interplay, then HAPPY TRAILS crystallizes the genre on record. Extemporizing mightily on two Bo Diddley songs ("Who Do You Love" and "Mona,") Quicksilver introduced new realms of expression to rock music.

Guitarists John Cipollina and Gary Duncan had contrasting, though naturally sympathetic textures and sound, goading each other to greater heights and creating an alchemy that was revered by concert-goers and musicians alike. To many, Cipollina, rather than Garcia, Santana or Kaukonen is the top SF guitar god. The following wave of Prog bands in the European theater, from Man to Kebnekais to Finch to Guru Guru, especially studied, plied and revelled in this sound.

Largely recorded live-in-concert, HAPPY TRAILS perfectly embodies the '60s era of experimentation - divining imagary and sensations that were rarely matched. Most other twin-guitar bands of the era were big on flash; fast and heavy licks, given to excess over form. John and Gary needed no such crutch! Their forms were bewitching and their amazing surreal guitar effects were built into that; they could play for hours, winding through spirit-filled canyons and phantasmagoric orbits of the senses without ever becoming mind-numbing or excessive. The rich, exploding colors and flashing fire they create here are dripping with sensual abandon, yet they are ever lucid and frighteningly immediate.

The album's mesmerizing power is brought out to its fullest on this superb pressing.
