CONDITION
Vinyl:
Side 1. EX
Side 2. VG
(A thick heavy vinyl 1968 UK first pressing. Visual condition of Side one: EX still retains its full gloss and sheen showing only a few very light marks and inaudible wispy hairlines. Visual condition of Side two: VG has one non audible and non-feelable paper like scuff maybe stylus scratch that runs over the entire side....Even though you can see this mark it does not affect the playback at all, side two plays excellently just like side one!! The whole record delivers great audio throughout with great powerful sound clarity and only occasional minor static)
Labels: EX
(Original Capitol 'Rainbow' labels are very clean with just a few spindle traces)
LP Sleeve: VG+
(The original 'Garrod and Lofthouse' front laminated sleeve , with iconic Rick Griffin artwork, is in very good + condition and has has been well preserved since the day it was bought over 40 years ago! There is some minor ringwear, and a few small laminate creases on the front, mainly near the spine and edges. There is a very tiny 5mm split on the bottom seam near the open out edge. The spine is straight and perfectly legible. The back is very clean with only minor light wear)

On offer here, from my own collection, is an original 1968 UK 1st pressing vinyl LP of the Quicksilver Messenger Service self-titled debut album, released on the UK (Made In Great Britain) 1st press Capitol Records 'Rainbow' label.
The first, eponymous LP released in 1968 by Quicksilver Messenger Service remains one of the truly essential records that came out of the of the San Francisco psychedelic music scene.
Although already enjoying a huge reputation for their extended live improvisations, the band favours a more restrained approach here. The accent is put evenly on melodic content and instrumental guitar prowess.
This album can be considered as the best of their studio output. While some prefer the mostly live Happy Trails, this self-titled debut album is inarguably their strongest set of studio material, with the accent on melodic folk-rock and astonishing acid guitar jams. Highlights include their cover of folk singer Hamilton Camp's "Pride of Man," probably their best studio track; "Light Your Windows," probably the group's best original composition; and founding member Dino Valenti's "Dino's Song" (Dino himself was in jail when the album was recorded). "Gold and Silver" is a wonderful instrumental jam, and the mindblowing 12-minute "The Fool" showcases some of the best acid guitar from the psychedelic era. The cover of folksinger Hamilton Camp's "Pride of Man" is excellent with their hard rock folk structure; "Light Your Windows" is a fine, original, lazy, bluesy rock piece; Dino Valenti's "Dino's Song" proves very catchy, with quite poppy overtones; "Gold and Silver" is a fabulous and very rhythmic instrumental jam based on Paul Desmond's famous 5/4 jazz composition "Take Five" recorded by the Dave Brubeck Quartet. Finally, the afore-mentioned monster "The Fool" is marked by the judicious use of improvised classical overtones, of controlled electronic feedback and of wah wah pedal with the sublime twin guitars of John Cipollina and Gary Duncan producing a breathtaking sonic dreamscape.
Although Cipollina's highly melodic, twangy, vibrato laden, individualistic lead guitar style dominates the proceedings, Gary Duncan should not be considered a second gun; his interest in Jazz as well as his guitar interplay with Cipollina were crucial to the Quicksilver sound as a whole.
This album is a 'must have' and quite essential for 60's psych-rock afficionados.
