Description

1979 UK EMI EMTC 103 LP 'A Night At The Opera' with all the requisite markers to denote a first pressing:

  • embossed gatefold sleeve
  • cut corner inner sleeve
  • Matrices YAX 5063-2 and YAX 5064-2 for Sides 1 & 2 respectively
  • 'BLAIRS' hand scratched in the dead wax run-offs on both sides
The gatefold sleeve is solid and strong with a nice spine. But being of 'white card' the outside has acquired some grubbiness, wear and blemishing over the years so overall I give the sleeve 7.5 /10 in recognition of these cosmetic defects.
At the bottom of the picture(s) inner sleeve is a 6cm seam split but apart from that and a few creases up top it's good. But why the practice of placing vinyl in a bare carded sleeve when ideally it should be in a polythene-lined sleeve for maximum protection?  As such I'm placing and posting the disc in such a sleeve.
On to the record itself which is flat and shiny and weighs 134g on the scale. The paper labels are clean with signs of several spins at the centre holes. Angling the disc under a bright light I see some light scuffs and hairlines so visually I rate the vinyl 7.5 /10 for condition. Return of course if not happy with my appraisal.
