Puff Daddy & The Family. No Way Out. Bad Boy Entertainment  Records(78612-73012-1). 1997. Double Album.
A classic that is the spiritual 3rd Biggie album - not "Born Again". Yeah the gloss is there , but "No Way Out" is depressing and as grim as the wake on the cover. Revisit this , and replace the original tracks with one of the many remixes and it adds a little more peace to the depressive state of the LP , but not really , especially with the NIN remix on "Victory" and the all-stars on The Shot Caller Remix on "All About The Benjamins" , really punctuating the sinister words in every bar. "Senorita" still holds this best production on the whole tape, though Puff's words are muffled , which isn't too big of a deal because it's a party record. On tracks like "Pain" and the diamond in the ruff "Is This The End?" (which if Nas' "You Owe Me" is on Ginuwine's greatest hits, where was this?) Puff's vocals punch and lound and clear enough to illicit a fear from the speaker's, fuck making them bleed. That Roy Ayer's sample on "The Been Around The World Remix" was so relaxing that I could almost forgive BIG's verses being left off, but no. Ma$e should have been replaced. But thankfully, Ma$e is barely on this record. Really Big L was the only standout in Children of the Corn for me. Still, sacrifice the Matt Wilder sample for the surprising Club Mix for the album closer, "Can't Nobody Hold Me Down", and even a Ma$e verse over the scratching on this breakbeat doesn't, well ... Let down. Which is the story of "No Way Out", get pass the terrible Biggie impression on "What You Gonna Do?" and this album serves it's purpose : a Biggie tribute, more original than any of the legends posthumous records , and perhaps Puff at his most humble and raw , something that only loss can bring out on a record.
