Provenance

Syndicate was released as a promotional single into radio stations in Japan around November time, late 1984. This is the year Prince's seventh album & his biggest hit “Purple Rain” was released. Syndicate was never commercially released so never charted. The vinyl is 33 years old.

The only musical track to be included on this single was Another Lonely Christmas, which was not included on Purple Rain. This is the only time Another lonely Christmas was released as an A side, it is better known for being the B side of “I would die for you”.

The B side here is unique in Prince history as it contains seven short messages by Prince, Apollonia and Sheila E. designed to be played by radio stations before their music, this is the only record Prince released with this specific structure of promotional interlude. Prince introducing Purple Rain On the B sides is an audio clip from the movie Purple Rain.

The record has a "not for sale" message on the label, the custom picture on the front sleeve is an artistic (Nancy Bundt commissioned by Prince) impression of one of Prince’s own Doves, Divinity. It is an iconic sleeve that the hardcore Prince collector will be familiar with, it’s arguably one of the most beautiful of all his catalogue & again examples another element of the product that contributes to its value.

Originally thought to be limited to 500 units like “His Majesty’s Pop Life” & “Strange Tales from the Rain”, it is now believed to have been far fewer, possibly a couple of hundred units although the exact number is not known. At the time of issue in Japan there were not enough units produced to accommodate every radio station. In addition today there are only 20 copies recorded on Discogs (of which this is one), I suspect there are only a handful that remain in the world today in this examples condition. The majority of copies were used & played by Japanese djs as intended in 84/85. Syndicate rarely comes to market, and ordinarily when it does for the reasons mentioned the condition is average. This is a very special example.

Condition

Mint condition - Incredibly rare in this condition. This version has been delicately cared for, unaffected by light & dust, protected by a plastic sleeve within a storage box. As depicted in the picture the sleeve is as bright and vivid just as it would have been 33 years ago, the vinyl is vibrant and the labels white text on the black label stand out. This truly is a stunning example, you wouldn’t guess it was 33 years old!
