Description

Rare! Two album set: Polynesian Traditional Music of Ontong Java (Solomon Islands), Collection Musee de l’Homme, Director: Gilbert Rouget, Recordings by: Hugo Zemp, Produced by: Disques Vogue, made in France, 1972.

Polynesian traditional music has almost completely disappeared in the majority of Polynesian Islands since the arrival of large numbers of Europeans who banned traditional music in favor of hymns and psalms. Traditional music has been better preserved in the Ontong Java atoll (Solomon Islands) than elsewhere in the South Pacific. Ritual festivals continued there until the 1940's. In the early 1970's, Hugo Zemp and his team convinced the natives to recreate their traditional music and dances for them. These field-recorded albums are the result.

Each album comes with 6 pages of printed explanation in French and English, with black & white photos. A sample of these pages is shown in the last photo of this listing.

Condition:

Volume One condition is VG+ Nice gloss, with has a few light scratches and very light scuffs. Cover VG+ with corner bumps.

Volume Two condition for Side A is VG+, but Side B has three small scratches (<1" each) that I can just feel with my fingernail, so I'd rate that side VG. Cover VG+ with corner bumps.

This set is from my father’s collection. I don’t have a record player. I do visual grading only. 
General grading guidelines I use:

Very Good Plus (VG+) means: Slight signs of wear (light scuffs, very light scratches, slight warping OK). Defects are cosmetic and should not affect play. Cover may have some very minor seam wear or a split less than one inch long.

Very Good (VG) means: Quite a few light scuffs & scratches. Groove wear noticeable, as are light scratches deep enough to feel with a fingernail. May lack most of the original gloss of factory-fresh records. Covers will have many signs of human handling: Ring wear in the middle or along the edges of the cover where the edge of a record would reside. Seam splitting will be more obvious; it may appear on all three sides, though it won’t be obvious upon looking. May have a price tag.
