Description
This sale is for an 1973 UK first pressing of Pink Floyd's Prog masterpiece the Dark side of the Moon. The record is pressed with a Harvest /EMI records solid blue prism label, and has A-2 B-2 Matrix. It contains all the extras including both posters, stickers and original inner, the only item missing is the sticker that would have been on the cover.
There are a number of Discogs criteria that confirm this as an early pressing, please see below.
1. 'The Gramophone Co.' text starts at 10 o'clock on label.
2. A-2/B-2 matrix stamps appear in the runout area.
3. There is 1 ink variation used for printing sleeve blue/black.
4. The sleeve is the right front opening of the gatefold cover is not sealed.
5. Inner sleeve is a distinctive polythene lined die cut black semi-matte paper with white printed text stating 2 patent numbers bottom left [1125555/1072844] and 'MADE IN GREAT BRITAIN' bottom right.
6. Posters and stickers are printed on matte paper.
7. Stickers are printed with the word "Permanent" on their backs.
8. This copy has a manufacturing defect on the track Money, where the song skips.
This early pressing features the matrix number SHVL 804 A-2 followed by P> and a small font C1 on side 1 (see final photos) SHVL 804 B-2 followed by an O and either an Ω an n on side 2
On very close inspection held up to a bright light I found a couple of short/ faint spindle marks on track three/side one (On the Run). Neither thankfully are very long nor deep -you can't feel them with your finger- and are seen here in the final photos. These are the exception rather than the rule, with the disc in otherwise pretty good shape with a clean / fresh surface and no scuffs/ scratches or hairline marks, I would conservatively grade this disc as VG+ The labels as you can see are also clean and free from wear on both sides.
I gave the record a good listen through and apart from the pressing defect on Money -which causes 2 jumps around the start of when the vocals come in then another shortly after- the record plays beautifully with a deep rich sound. There were no pops, skips, or jumps or portions with crackle or distortion, this has been a well cared for disc.
The record is housed in the original poly lined black inner with 1125555/1072844 patent numbers. Along side the original inner the 2 posters are present and in VG+ condition (no rips tears etc) and the 2 stickers are unused (though with creases).
The card cover I have graded as VG as there is some rubbing/ edge wear to the extremities of the gatefold sleeve. There is a also faint trace of ring wear to the rear, a crack to the spine edge which is also bumped to the bottom corner. However it is structurally fine with no splits, writing or sticker removal marks etc.
All in all I would say a better than average copy of this real rarity, a great sounding copy complete with all the extras. Just a quick note to say I prefer to auction this item, so will not be fielding any 'buy it now' offers nor ending the auction prematurely. I am prepared to post abroad but sorry only via the eBay global shipping programme, so please be aware of any additional costs this may add. Thank you for viewing this item.
