This album hit #1 in England and got to #55 in the US. Since then it’s sold more than a half a million copies just here in the US.
The cover was designed by art collective Hipgnosis and shows a cow standing in a pasture.
The only writing being the catalog number in the top right corner. Pink Floyd requested that their new album had "something plain" on the cover, which ended up being the image of a cow. Storm Thorgerson said that he simply drove out into a rural area near Potters Bar and photographed the first cow he saw. The cow’s name was "Lulubelle III". More cows appear on the back cover, again with no text or titles, and on the inside gatefold.
This cover is in VG+ condition. Very minimal cover wear, all the seams are solid without any splits. Nice color and shine.
However, there is a factory defect on the inside gatefold as you can see in the top right corner, the paper folded when it was printed. And if you look you can see Alan Parson’s misspelled name.
Looking at the vinyl, Both sides have some light surface marks and a few light scratches which cause some crackle and pop on the quieter parts but no skips whatsoever.
Side One is one 23 minute piece, the title track, Atom Heart Mother which was put together from a bunch of instrumental pieces. The main theme guitarist David Gilmour has called "Theme from an Imaginary Western" The song has an orchestral arrangement that was composed and arranged by Ron Geesin and recorded with the EMI Pops Orchestra and haunting vocals by the John Alldis Choir. Pink Floyd do not sing on the track at all. Back in 1970, Floyd used to play this live some shows with the choir and orchestra. There’s some video you can find of some of these shows. In 2008, Geesin performed "Atom Heart Mother" with Italian Floyd tribute band Mun Floyd over two nights as part of the Chelsea Festival. Geesin introduced it with a history and slide show. The second show featured David Gilmour with Geesin on stage for the performance, which was extended to 30 minutes.
Side Two opens with a Roger Waters sung folk ballad called "If" This is followed by Rick Wright's trippy "Summer '68". Next is David Gilmour’s folky, "Fat Old Sun", which he still cites as a personal favorite. The final track, "Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast", is a spaced-out 13 minutes divided into three segments, each with its own descriptive title, joined by dialogue and sound effects of then-roadie Alan Styles preparing, discussing, and eating breakfast and containing sound effects put together by mostly drummer Nick Mason. Roger Waters contributed the sound of a dripping faucet which continues into the inner groove, and thus plays on indefinitely.
While Floyd were recording this at Abbey Road Studios in London, Gilmour and Wright were also working with Sid Barrett and Syd would occasionally observe his old band as they were recording Atom Heart Mother. Listing to this, I wonder what he was thinking.
