PiL – Metal Box (1979 UK 1st Press Triple Vinyl Set)


Original UK first pressing of Public Image Ltd’s iconic Metal Box, featuring three 12” 45 RPM records housed in the distinctive metal canister. This edition is known for its high-fidelity sound and striking minimalist design.


Provenance:

I bought this copy on the day of its release from Sydney Scarborough, a legendary record shop on Savile Street in Kingston-upon-Hull, renowned for its extensive vinyl collection. Funny enough, I didn’t even own a record player at the time—just a tape deck—so I had to play it at a friend’s house. Despite being a fan of the Sex Pistols, Metal Box didn’t quite click with me back then, apart from the track Albatross. As a result, it was played only a couple of times before being tucked away.


It’s spent the last 40+ years stored safely in a box in my parents’ loft, untouched and unplayed since.


Condition:

• Metal Canister: Excellent condition with typical oxidation/tarnish expected for its age but structurally solid and well-preserved.

• Vinyl Records: Near mint with a beautiful sheen. All three discs show minimal signs of handling. No chips on the outer edges. Just one extremely fine, superficial surface mark on Vinyl 1, completely inaudible during playback.

• Centre Labels: Remarkably clean with no spindle wear—clear evidence that these records have been barely played.

• Insert & Inlay: The original insert is excellent with minor staining; the inlay is near mint.


Playback Notes:

I’ve visually inspected each record under strong light and confirm their superb condition. Any specs in the photos are dust particles or stray hairs—not scratches. Playback is clean, with no audio issues.
