Impossible to find still sealed copy of the first US issue of this crossover electronic pop/musique concrete classic. Mass For Today (aka Les Jerks Electroniques de la Messe Pour Le Temps Present) is a wild, primitive rock-funk-electronic hybrid, with Henry jamming on noisy electronic effects along with a psychedelic rock band complete with fuzz guitar and funky drummer. The work was a collaboration with Michel Colombier made for a ballet by Maurice Bejart, and it destroys all competition from other contemporary Moog-pop efforts like Jean-Jacques Perrey, Gershon Kingsley, etc.; this album became heavily influential to the hip-hop and techno that followed decades later, with samples making their way into tracks by Coldcut and DJ Premier and even the theme music for the Matt Groening TV series Futurama. Also included is a long excerpt from the experimental electronic work The Green Queen (La Reine Verte), a more "serious" composition which uses tape-manipulated pure electronic tones (including what sounds like heavy use of a Theremin) to create alien soundscapes. Rounding out the disc are short excerpts of Henry's classic musique concrete Variations For A Door & A Sigh, making this all in all an excellent disc spanning pop to radical experimentation.

artist info from album notes:
Henry studied under Nadia Boulanger and Olivier Messiaen, and together with Pierre Schaeffer founded the world's first tape music studio; the INA-GRM was a center of study for electroacoustic pioneers like Francois Bayle, Michel Chion, Luc Ferrari, Francois Bernard Mache, Ivo Malec, Bernard Parmegiani, Michel Redolfi, Jean-Claude Risset, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Edgar Varese, Jean-Michelle Jarre, and Iannis Xenakis. Henry's groundbreaking work would influence contemporaries like John Cage, Tod Dockstader, Cecil Leuter/Roger Roger, Jon Appleton, Vladimir Ussachevsky, Ilhan Mimaroglu, and Jean-Jacques Perrey. He has worked with Spooky Tooth, Coldcut, DJ Vadim, William Orbit, Fatboy Slim and Funki Porcini. This lp was issued by the Limelight electronic-psych-jazz label known for their releases of Mecki Mark Men, Fifty Foot Hose, Paul Beaver, Bernie Krause, Henk Badings, Tom Dissevelt, Dick Raaijmakers, Ruth White, Roland Kirk, Paul Bley, Electronic Concept Orchestra, Melvin Jackson Funky Skull, etc., and will also be of interest to fans of Raymond Scott, Bruce Haack, Robert Moog, Dick Hyman, Claude Denjean, Mort Garson, and Piero Umiliani.
