In spite of the cover, this isn't a novelty album. Well, if you consider a jazz drummer leading a combo through its paces a novelty--for which a case might be made--then this fits that bill, but by most definitions Blues for Dracula doesn't fit the novelty album template. I doubt a single track from this record has ever been plated on a Dr. Demento show, for instance. I make this statement in spite of the fact that Philly Joe busts out in a Bela Lugosi-style monologue over the head of the opening track.
In case you didn't know, Philly Joe Jones was one of the great drummers of the be-bop era. He played on some of the most important jazz recordings of all time, including Blue Train and Porgy and Bess. The man knew his way around a drum set, and he knew how to handle himself with stellar musicians.
The cast of Blues for Dracula is impressive, with Nat Adderley on cornet and Tommy Flanagan on the piano. Along with Jones, these two shine most brightly on Blues for Dracula. Frankly, it seems more like Adderley's album than Jones'. Nat rips out some amazing solos on "Tune-Up" and "Owl". Jones has a nice solo or two, but he's the drummer for fuck sake. The tunes themselves aren't all that exciting, though each has its moments. The album sounds like a typical Riverside release, where the musicians showed up at the studio, blew through some songs and left a few hours later. Riverside got some great albums from that approach. This may not be a great one, but it ain't bad either.
If you're dying to hear a drummer do a Dracula impersonation, then this is the album for you. If you're looking for a good solid jazz record from the late fifties with some fine solos and solid rhythm section work, then this may be the album for you as well. If you're looking for a record of scary noises to play outside your house to frighten the local neighborhood kids on Halloween, well, you'll probably want to keep looking.
Condition
I tend to be conservative when grading records and do my best to be as comprehensive and accurate as possible. I don't settle for a visual inspection. Records can look fine yet sound like crap. I also listen to every record/song I sell.
One bidder retracted, claiming this is an OJC (Original Jazz Classics) re-issue. While it is a re-issue, as near as I can tell, it is not the OJC, (1986) which is labeled as such. This Japanese copy was pressed in 1974. OJC appears nowhere in the packaging or on the disc labels of this record. If you can tell me where I should look to confirm this, I'll gladly reduce the price by half.
I rate the vinyl as very good to excellent. Vinyl is super glossy and nearly free from visible flaws. Lead-in grooves are clean and fingerprint free. Great import pressing on a nice piece of vinyl. Very little discernible surface noise.
