Wings, also known as Paul McCartney and Wings, were an Anglo-American rock band formed in 1971 by former Beatle Paul McCartney with his wife Linda, session drummer Denny Seiwell, and former Moody Blues guitarist Denny Laine. Wings were noted for frequent personnel changes as well as commercial success, going through three lead guitarists and four drummers. However, the core trio of the McCartneys and Laine remained intact throughout the group's existence.
Created following the McCartneys' 1971 album Ram, the band's first two albums, Wild Lifeand Red Rose Speedway (the latter featuring guitarist Henry McCullough), were viewed as artistic disappointments beside Paul McCartney's work with the Beatles. After the release ofthe title track of the James Bond movie Live and Let Die, McCullough and Seiwell resigned from the band. The McCartneys and Laine then released 1973's Band on the Run, a commercial and critical success that spawned two top ten singles in "Jet" and the title track. Following that album, the band recruited guitarist Jimmy McCulloch and drummer Geoff Britton, only for Britton to quit shortly afterwards and be replaced by Joe English. With the new line-up, Wings released Venus and Mars, which included the US number one single "Listen to What the Man Said", and undertook a highly successful world tour over 1975–76. Intended as more of a group effort, Wings at the Speed of Sound was issued midway through the tour and featured the hit singles "Silly Love Songs" and "Let 'Em In".
In 1977, the band earned their only UK number one single, with "Mull of Kintyre", which became the then-best selling UK single in history. Wings experienced another line-up shuffle, however, with both McCulloch and English departing before the release of the group's 1978 album London Town. The McCartneys and Laine again added new members, recruiting guitarist Laurence Juber and drummer Steve Holley. The resulting album, Back to the Egg, was a relative flop, with its singles under-performing and the critical reception negative. During the supporting tour, Paul McCartney was arrested in Japan for cannabis possession, putting the band on hold. Despite a final US number one, the live version of McCartney's solo single "Coming Up", Wings broke up permanently in 1981.
Wings over America is a triple live album by the British-American band Wings, released in December 1976. The album is a collection of recordings gathered from the American leg of the band's acclaimed 1975–76 Wings Over the World tour. Issued on MPL Communications, and on MPL and Capitol Records in the United States, it peaked at number 8 on the UK Albums Chart and number 1 on the US Billboard Top LPs & Tape listings.
In addition to including several of Paul McCartney's hits with Wings, the live album features performances of "Yesterday", "Lady Madonna", "The Long and Winding Road" and other songs that he recorded with the Beatles. The album cover was designed by Hipgnosis, and consists of a painting of an airliner about to open its cabin door. Wings over America was remastered and reissued in May 2013.
Originally, Wings over America was to be a two-record set of highlight performances, but this was rethought due to the success of a bootleg called Wings from the Wings, released as a triple record set, on red, white, and blue vinyl, recorded on 23 June 1976 at The Forum, in California. This caused McCartney to rework the official release as a three-record set which was compiled from all recorded shows of the band's America leg of their world tour that spring, of which, McCartney listened to all of the tapes and selected five of the best performances of the whole 28-song set list. McCartney chose and mixed the final set of recordings after six weeks of listening during October–November 1976, after having spent September and October repeatedly performing. Numerous songs, however, were taken from the 23 June show. "Soily" was recorded on 7 June 1976 at McNichols Sports Arena in Denver. Some recordings, however, received studio overdubs. Wings' drummer, Joe English, said that the "overdubs were necessary because of people singing out of tune
E. J. Korvette, also known as Korvettes, was an American chain of discount department stores, founded in 1948 in New York City. It is notable as one of the first department stores to challenge the suggested retail price provisions of anti-discounting statutes.[1] Founded by World War II veteran Eugene Ferkauf and his friend, Joe Zwillenberg, E.J. Korvette did much to define the idea of a discount department store. It displaced earlier five and dime retailers and preceded later discount stores, like Walmart, and warehouse clubs such as Costco.
The company failed to properly manage its business success, which led to decline and its 1980 bankruptcy and closure.
