Paul Chain – Violet Theatre Paul Chain was the stage name of Italian musician Paolo Catena, a pioneering force in doom metal, psychedelic rock, and avant-garde experimental music. Best known as the founder of Death SS, Chain left the band in 1984 to pursue his own musical vision, leading to the formation of Paul Chain Violet Theatre, a project blending traditional doom metal, progressive rock, and eerie, theatrical elements.
Project Overview Paul Chain Violet Theatre was active primarily in the mid-to-late 1980s, with a unique style that took inspiration from Black Sabbath’s heavy, doom-laden riffs but incorporated haunting organ melodies, spacey improvisations, and Chain’s signature "phonetic singing"—a technique where he used nonsensical syllables as a vocal instrument. The music was dark, atmospheric, and otherworldly, standing apart from traditional metal acts of the time.
Paul Chain’s work, including his solo career post-Violet Theatre, remains deeply respected in underground metal and psychedelic rock circles. His music is known for its mystical, surreal, and highly emotional qualities, making him a cult figure in the doom metal and occult rock scenes.
Notable Releases under Paul Chain Violet Theatre Detaching From Satan (EP, 1984) – A raw, Sabbath-influenced release with eerie keyboards and doom-laden guitars. Highway to Hell (EP, 1986) – Features progressive and psychedelic influences, with hypnotic, eerie atmospheres. In the Darkness (1986) – A full-length album that blends doom, heavy metal, and spacey, theatrical compositions. After Violet Theatre, Paul Chain continued his solo career, delving even further into experimental, ambient, and improvisational music, while still maintaining his roots in heavy, doom-laden compositions.
