Pat Metheny - New Chautauqua - Vinyl LP - Unplayed Stamped Promo Editions of Contemporary Music (ECM) - ECM-1-1131 - 1979 - Promo
Note: I have had several buyers ask why I have 40+ year old LPs from jazz labels that are unsealed, and yet unplayed. I worked in the retail side of music for a while, and I recognized that jazz labels, particularly ECM, Pablo, & CTI, took great care in producing their artists from studio to pressing. The ECM LP and box sets were basically the Mobile Fidelity Half Speed Masters before such a thing existed. The artwork was on point, and the box sets were amazing presentations. The vinyl was pressed in Germany and the quality was unsurpassed. I was friends with my Warners/ECM rep and he was kind enough to make sure I got promos of his best releases,which, being promos, were not sealed. ECM generally did not mark promos with stamps, saw cuts or punches (during this period at least).
Why weren't they played? I was 16-25 during my time in retail and was more of a Van Halen-Springsteen-Knopfler fan, but I appreciated the quality of the product and realized they might be collectibles. The only ECM LP I actually listened to was the Keith Jarrett Sun Bear Concerts, which sadly, I lent to a piano playing friend, and never saw again.
