GMM2012 - Nowadays any atmospheric metal band with a female lead vocalist is labelled gothic metal but let’s not forget this subgenre is actually rooted in Halifax in rainy old Albion. Paradise Lost’s 1990 debut Lost Paradise and their subsequent two releases were pure death/doom albums. By the mid-nineties, the foursome had evolved into a successful gothic metal band with cleaner vocals so when they started experimenting with electro and synth pop elements on the next three releases, the early fans were less than pleased. Fortunately, their gothic roots won out and in the early noughties, the band returned to their former gloomy gothic sound. Their 2011 live release Draconian Times MMXI proves they can still deliver the goods so don’t miss out!
