The one and only Freak Scene record is just one chapter in the strange saga of entrepreneurial psychedelic pioneer/journeyman Rusty Evans, whose first album was the Deep's 1966 release Psychedelic Moods. Like that project, the Freak Scene was strictly a studio outing staffed by sidemen, not a full-fledged band at all. Nevertheless, Psychedelic Psoul's reputation as a psych-exploitation album is unjust; while the trippy themes and production techniques employed here would become clichés of psychedelic-era rock, they weren't clichés in 1967, when the style was still in its infancy. In fact, a strong case could be made for Evans being ahead of the curve. "Mind Bender," for instance, with its Dadaist recitations, throbbing pulse, and scrappy guitars, predated the Velvet Underground's very similar "Murder Mystery" by a couple of years. The combination of tape manipulation and exotic world music influences on the short instrumental "Grok!" seems rather prescient in retrospect as well. Besides, even if the most cynical opinions turned out to be true, and the backwards guitars, fuzztones, and "far out" effects overflowing from most of the tracks on Psychedelic Psoul were incorporated strictly in the interest of bandwagon-jumping, it was all done skillfully enough that it doesn't really matter, especially so many decades after the fact. Psychedelic Psoul stands as an evocative sonic time capsule, although "topical" spoken word pieces like "When in the Course of Human Events" admittedly haven't aged as well as the album's more conventional, melodic compositions. Followers of Evans' journey -- after the Freak Scene, he went on to make an excellent, atmospheric psych-folk album under the alias Marcus -- may be interested to note that Psychedelic Psoul's opening track, "A Million Grains of Sand," appeared in different versions on both Psychedelic Moods and the Marcus album

(EXCERPT FROM AN ONLINE REVIEW BY JAMES ALLEN, ALL MUSIC GUIDE  /ALLMUSIC.COM/)

This obscure band managed to create in the mid-1967 one of the finest, most extreme and experimental of all bizarre psychedelic albums. The sound is thick with fuzz, feedback, echo and every other sound effect known to a psychedelic mind, and the music sounds as if coming from your inner brain's innermost chambers. A unique psych listening experience, which will NEVER quite be captured on compact disc adequately. Track listing: A Million grains of sand - Intrapolation: we shall overcome - Rose of smiling faces - Behind the mind - The subway ride thru inner space - Butterfly dream - My rainbow life - The center of my soul - Watered-down soul - Red roses will weep- Mind bender - Grok!

The PROMOTIONAL, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed among the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals", which is to say the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

·       CONDITION:

·       RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          Stereo  pressing of this title is (somewhat counterintuitively) much rarer, and by far more preferable to its mono  counterpart. The mix is more graphic, the sound resolution more precise, and the channel separation (which does not exist on mono version) adds a whole new dimension to the music. Also, the stereo mixes are (by definition) somewhat different than on the mono version. We estimate that mono copies of this album outnumber stereo copies  by a ratio of at least 3:1.

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          The record comes in a poly-lined inner sleeve, which has - apparently with success - shielded the vinyl from the harmful impact of elements over many years!

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       THE COVER

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+(+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Back cover has some light yellowish stains, probably from exposure to humidity (covering about 10% of the back panel).

-        Cover has a slight warp/curvature (front panel is slightly convex, back panel is slightly concave)

-        Cover has some writing on its front side (name of the previous owner written in blue ballpoint pen, about 1/4 x 3 inches in size)

-        Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3 (front side) and 4 (back side)

-        Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-        Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

-        Cover shows some considerable yellowing on back side, apparently from aging

-        Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-        Minor shelf wear noted on the seams (nothing significant)

NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE  COVER
