TRE DISCHI APPLE

I am a very longtime Beatles fan and collector. 

I have always been searching for items in beautiful condition and I have always been obsessed by trying to update my records.

The item below is part of my collection which I am now selling on eBay.

This is a very rare item unique to Italian market, which was issued to launch Apple in Italy in 1968.

It is, more or less, the equivalent of what was “Our first four” in UK.  

Although available in the shops in very limited quantities in 1968 (and NEVER repressed), this item carries a PROMOTIONAL catalogue number

(DPR meaning “Disco promozionale”) and in fact the Beatles interview is issued in the promotional white label.

This special item, very rare even in Italy, comes in a special presentation wallet (folded over) with four pockets

inside, each of them holding the following records.

1)    Una sensazionale intervista dei Beatles (Apple DPR 108) containing a special Beatles interview

released by Kenny Everett

2)    Quelli erano giorni/Turn turn turn (Apple 2) by Mary Hopkin.

It’s in fact “those were the days” sung in Italian

3)    Sour milk sea/The eagle laughs at you (Apple 3) by Jackie Lomax.

4)    Maybe tomorrow/And her daddy’s a millionaire (Apple 5) by the Iveys

The cover, which is, to me, the most difficult thing to find in any condition, has been very well preserved and is in beautiful condition.

As you will probably know, all Apple records have a label which is made of ringed circle which leaves its impression to the cover if left inside for longtime.

In this case, the records have been always kept SEPARATED by the sleeve and therefore there is NO TRACE OF RING WEAR at all on the sleeve.

Just have a look on eBay and see if you find one in this same condition (if any copy at all).

The colours are still vibrant. There is a small trace of a sticker (removed) on the upper left hand corner of the back cover,

but the colour of the sleeve is untouched.

No writing, no marks whatsoever. All four pockets are in perfect condition. See the pictures.

The records have been on the turntable just once, to play them and give them the appropriate grading.

I have carefully listened to them and I would say that the sound is still very nice, although you can see that there are a few small cloudy areas

which caused a little lessening to the sound quality in some cases.

Labels are perfect and untouched.

Just have a look at the photos.

This is one the rarest Italian items in the Beatles collection and it’s very difficult to find it in any condition, let alone in this condition.

Released in Italy only, this record includes an interview to the Beatles, made by journalist Kenny Everett.
You can hear John singing Cottonfields, Paul Strawberry Fields Forever and all singing Goodbye to Kenny Everett.
The record was packaged with 3 other singles (APPLE 2, APPLE 3 and APPLE 5)and had a sleeve with printed on 'una sensazionale intervista dei beatles + 3 dischi apple'.

It was pressed to launch Apple in Italy, and it was issued in a very limited quantity of copies

The vinyl singles all have large jukebox style centres. The Jackie Lomax, Mary Hopkin and Ivys singles all have regular green Apple labels, but the Beatles interview has a white label with a black boxed 'Apple' logo text.

The Beatles Interview was conducted by Kenny Everett in August 1968, side one contains part 1 which lasts 3:30, side two contains part 2 which lasts 3:52
The interview begins with John singing 'Cottonfields' and ends with the whole band singing 'Goodbye' to Kenny Everret with much fun in between.

Housed in unique quad fold picture sleeve featuring a large Apple (sliced and unsliced) design on the front side and on the other side, top left is a picture of Paul McCartney with Mary Hopkin, top right is George Harrison with Jackie Lomax, bottom left is an Apple logo with The Ivys text and bottom right is a picture of the Beatles. The sleeve is designed so that the 7" singles fits into the relevant picture pocket.
At the top of the picture sleeve when opened there are two eyelets through them which would have been used to display the item in a shop.

Agli inizi del 1964, Harry Benson stava per prendere un aereo per l’Africa quando fu raggiunto da una telefonata del suo photo editor del Daily Express.

Si sarebbe dovuto recare urgentemente a Parigi per domumentare la Beatlemania francese. Quello fù un momento davvero decisivo per la sua carriera.

Benson fu accolto con grande calore dal gruppo e dal loro entourage e divenne uno dei fotografi più vicini alla band inglese.

A Parigi scattò la celeberrima foto della lotta con i cuscini all’Hotel George V; successivamente fotografò il loro primo viaggio negli Stati Uniti

e l’impatto con l’isteria collettiva che si scatenò a New York, la famosa partecipazione all’Ed Sullivan Show,

la tappa in Florida con l’incredibile incontro con Cassius Clay e infine il set del film Tutti per uno (1964)

La collaborazione continuò nel 1966, quando Benson fu il fotografo della luna di miele di George alle Barbados e del notissimo tour americano della band.

I luminosi bianchi e neri di Benson mostrano da vicino i Beatles mentre compongono, cantano, incontrano i loro fan,

si rilassano, e comunque affrontano la loro fama crescente.

Oltre alle centinaia di fotografie, molte delle quali inedite, il volume è arricchito dall’introduzione

scritta dallo stesso Benson, e da citazioni ed estratti dei giornali dell’epoca.

Behind Beatlemania

In early 1964, Harry Benson was getting on a plane for a foreign assignment in Africa, when he got a call from the photo editor of London newspaper The Daily Express. He was now going with The Beatles to Paris to document French Beatlemania and what followed was the biggest (ticket to) ride of his life.

Benson was warmly welcomed into The Beatles’ inner sanctum, resulting in some of the most intimate photographs ever taken of the band, then on the cusp of world domination. In Paris, he took the famous photograph of the Fab Four having a pillow fight at the George V Hotel; he shot their groundbreaking first visit to the United States, the full impact of New York hysteria, their famous appearance on The Ed Sullivan show, the band in Florida, including their surprising encounter with Cassius Clay; as well as on the set of A Hard Day’s Night. The relationship continued in 1966, including George’s honeymoon in Barbados and their notorious US tour, under the shadow cast by Lennon’s comment that the Beatles were “bigger than Jesus Christ.”

Benson’s luminous black and white photographs show at close quarters The Beatles composing, performing, encountering their fans, relaxing, and engaging with each other, while trying to cope with their increasingly isolating fame. In addition to hundreds of photographs, many previously unseen, there is an introductory essay by Benson as well as quotes and newspaper clippings from the period.

Glasgow-born HARRY BENSON has photographed every US President since Eisenhower, the Civil Rights movement, and was next to Robert Kennedy when he was assassinated. As well as The Beatles, he has shot some of the biggest personalities of the last 50 years, including Michael Jackson, Elizabeth Taylor and Her Majesty The Queen. In 2009, he was made Commander of the British Empire (CBE).
