In the mid-60s, Rio de Janeiro poet Vinicius de Moraes and guitarist Baden Powell became absorbed in Afro-Brazilian religious music from Bahia, a fixation that might have led somewhere academic, but never did. 'Canto de Ossanha' opens with a looping minor-key guitar figure, percussion locked into a steady ritual pulse while the vocal arrives in clipped, chant-like phrases. 'Canto de Xango' slows things, spacing each drum hit so the melody hangs in the gaps. Then 'Canto de Iemanja' threads flute lines through the rhythm, softening the surface without easing the tension. It's precise yet carries weight.
