Gila's Conny Veit (yes GILA, the legendary GILA guitarist) steps out, combined with guitarist Daniel Fichelscher who also gracefully slides into a dual guitarist role, and they both lead the way on the highly impressive 1973 Popol Vuh recording. Much in the same approach as the groups previous album. Bigger surprise to discover here is that x- Amon Duul member Fichelscher features his lead guitar work which centers this illustrious album -- and his solos often sound a lot like Conny Veit.

Advise to acid rock fans - don't discount this album - very much appealing to fans of not only the Krautrock era but USA (etc) psychedelic scene in general.

The album sufficiently captures a gorgeously mellow atmosphere. The characteristic musical reference to the ancient cultures shimmers powerfully from the fanfare opening, sticking with heavenly mantric loops of trippy guitar and keyboards. The music on the album is transcendental as ever, with themes not only drawn from religious vocabulary, but also centered on Greek mythology, all in spite of the record's Japanese-styled archer drawing on the cover. The sonic presentation of King Minos is positive and a delightful exploration within a rock-based emphasized flight over royal pastures from ages old exotic history. Powerful crashes of cymbals flourish divine shimmering combined with rhythmic pulse, strengthened by percussion, forming a fine basis for the multilayered guitar driven improvisations circling around a solitary key note.

"Morgengruß" greets the dawn with gentle acoustic guitar layers, caressing a tender solo from amplified guitar, setting the scenery for the sequence of "Würfelspiel" -- where keys and flute are emphasized, balancing the guitar presence amid lovely melodies and fine rhythmic arrangements - with presence of drums. In spite of the rock association of  drumming, there's no bass guitar, instead, lower notes are being played from the keys, delivering a peculiar tone to the record's sound.

The first side closes to the slow grandiose visions of Promised Land, its illuminations carefully lingering on keyboard work, leading to an ascension theme from the bands previous "Seligpreisung" album , particularly the track "Agnus Dei", which was some sort of a spiritual climax for group leader Florian Frick.

Elsewhere, flipping the disc over, conjures an epic (side long) tale which includes female vocals uniting with the beautiful keyboard chords and waves of drum plates ... a soothing opening sequence exhilarates from the start. Suddenly, the serene scenery starts to wave with motion, spiraling guitars join in with tom-tom drums. These rock elements enhance a unique bloom, reminiscent from groups last album , as well as from their previous monumental masterpiece "Hosianna Mantra". Moving forward on this title track epic, the synthesis of sounds wanders from one theme to another, flowing with a flying to a higher key state of mind -onto the elevation in gliding along with wings of angels. Perhaps to decipher the understanding of this wonderful side long epic would be to include the inclusion of King Minos. Following the tales and myths related, one historian might recall Theseus, sending seven men to the labyrinth of Minotaur, then slaying the mythic beast; other possibilities may even include Orion... 

Overall a highly compelling effort by the legendary POPOL VUH, who created this highly enlightening album.
