Description
This item was originally purchased from a small local auction house in Kent, southern England. The catalogue description stated :" PINK FLOYD Circa l970s:Box of lighting effect equipment used by Pink Floyd on tour in the l970s". Judging by the glass psychedelic oil slides and the condition of the box itself, its clear that by the l970s,the Floyds stage effects went way beyond this! Fans of the Syd era will know that the psychedelic bubble projectors were really only in use from about l966-l968. The Barrett era is of course legendary, and their stage presentation and light show were absolutely integral to what the Floyd all about. The music complimented the effects and the effects complimented the music. When I asked who donated the equipment to the auction, I was told its was a couple of ex-roadies who had seemingly retrived it from the "lead singers barn"! The box which is almost falling apart contains PARTS of what I would conclude to be some of the Pinks Floyds lighting apparatus, including lenses, kaliedoscopes ,mounts etc. It is a combination of pieces that also include several circular glass sheets that still have the multicoloured psychedelic oil bubbles dried in to this very day! Its almost as if time had stood still since the very last show in l968!! Although I am a dealer,I was for many years a Pink Floyd collector( a completist). Having kept much of the vinyl for myself, anything that strays towards memorabillia I now sell. This item (from a personal viewpoint) is as iconic for the early Pink Floyd,as the uniforms were for the Beatles on their "Sgnt Pepper cover. This I know is a controversial item, and to guarantee provinence is almost impossible (unlike signatures which can be accuratly assesed at Frasers in London for example).Although many of the the more mainstream components in the box would have been commercially available at the time, it then steps way beyond the norm when you see the psychedelic slides. It is impossible for me to prove conclusivly that these are the parts of a light show used by Pink Floyd ,however its hard to believe any other alternative ( although it could also have been an"in house" light show used by many other groups). In an ideal world ( and Im sure many sellers of memorabillia would agree) one would love to produce a photograph of either Nick,Syd,Roger or Rick holding the box and stating the obvious! However it would be bizarre to think that a private individual at the time would have his own Psychedelic bubble machine, and with at least some evidence having been stated in the auction catalogue, there is every reason for me to believe that its the real thing. Thanks very much!
