A Special Note About This Album & Copy: Of all the classic titles I offer and get asked about few get close to ‘Wish You Were Here’. I get regular Emails asking me if I have a ‘perfect’ playing copy from frustrated vinyl collectors who simply cannot find a clean playing copy of this most wanted title. Well it’s a very difficult ask and they are never easy to find as so many have often considerable surface sound, crackle, pops and clicks and sometimes even pressing sounds and distortion. Even from new, the UK copies were to say the least ‘variable’. It is very clear to me where the problem lies. Few things in life are guaranteed, but the anticipation for the follow-up to the massive selling ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ was immense, this WAS a certain big seller. Hence this album was ‘mass produced’ quickly to meet demand and pressing quality suffered (not the production however which was again stunning). This record has incredible, genuine high fidelity sound values but appears let down by pressing quality. The title is common enough to find but a lesser percentage will ever play well enough to satisfy the audiophile listener. The higher-end systems ruthlessly reveal flaws and unwanted sounds and I rarely find copies suitable for offering (and it’s not for the want of trying). If they don’t please me, they are not good enough for others – that simple. This copy looks hardly played, unusual in-itself. and it is a first issue with the A-1 / B-3 matrixes. These I have found the hardest to find that play well. It is almost with baited breath I play-grade any copy or this record, almost expecting gentle surface sound at best. But this one plays superbly with very little unwanted at all and was a real pleasure giving my system a worthy workout. This copy includes the original serrated post-card, later ones were smooth edged and the wide opening card inner (which never treated the record surfaces well). Lastly, this one retains a very high percentage of it’s original black-wrap with the very large sticker fully intact and in super condition. This black wrapping is now considered an integral part of this album – most removed it entirely when purchased – myself very much included. Most wanted to reveal the main cover and only way to do so was to disgard the wrap. So this is a very impressive example, it looks impressive and sounds fantastic – easily in the type of condition I want to offer and this a scarce opportunity. Any collector who buys an untested copy of this record does so with considerable risk – few will be disappointed with this far more elusive, barely played record that IS very well pressed indeed.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive and I am struggling to find a single noteworthy spindle trace at all. Maybe just one faint one on side two when viewed under a magnifying glass.

Rarity: It would be foolish say this album is even scarce, but only a small percentage are found with any of the original black wrapping still attached. This makes a considerable difference for the more serious collector, even though the black shrinkwrap is not fully intact – and allow for shinkage which this always does – it is never easy finding one with a great deal more. Also finding the sticker practically as made is a huge bonus. But even more important for me is the record. It plays very impressively with little unwanted and offers all the detail, dynamics and sonic delivery of the mastertape. That aspect is really priceless.

Brief Info: Few rock fans will not know this album well. Consistently high in all all-time great lists whether compiled by critics or the record-buying public, this album sold in vast numbers but fewer remain in fine overall conditions or play well and have all the original pieces. It’s success and huge demand is, I feel sure, why this record has so many problems. Pressed in vast numbers and most-all on thin vinyl (even the first-made), quality-control was probably not high on the agenda, units in shops was the order-of-the-day, hence so many copies failed to impress for clean sound. Floyd’s homage to original guitarist/vocalist Syd Barrett, this has always been one of the band’s most popular albums and justifiably so. I will never even consider offering this classic set unless it plays well enough to do so, and only a small percentage ever do, indeed this is first UK-pressed ‘Wish’ I have offered on Ebay for some time. Many fans will still tolerate less than quiet pressings of this record to enjoy the true drama and impact of this beautifully produced album. Vinyl still has the edge in terms of dynamic range and impact and my LP12 made this record sound quite stunning. This record was immediately impressive, any surface sound is very gentle, infrequent and faint. I play all my records on an Linn LP12 front end, it is ruthlessly revealing, and this still revealed little unwanted. The saxophone break on ‘Diamond’ still sends a shiver down the spine as does the effects on ‘Machine’. The original packaging is close to complete, few opened examples will have all the black wrapping and most-all buyers removed it all anyway - myself very much included when I bought a copy on the day of issue. I did not even consider keeping it on, I wanted to see the real cover not something that resembled a dustbin liner. But time changes opinions, and many want the original packaging too, but few still exist with it included, hence the vast gain in price guide values for those that do. This black shinkwrap always contracts, so this in real terms has lost little. When all is taken into consideration, this is a much rarer copy and a fine chance for the Floyd collector to hear a way better than ‘average’ copy – truly, many are unlistenable with loud and constant crackle with clicks often inflicted by debris inside that hard card inner. Personally, I would never even consider buying a non- and critically play-graded copy of this album. Some of my regular buyers tell me they are almost stock-piling VERY noisy copies, fed-up waiting for the ‘chance’ elusive quiet pressing to come along. Well I feel sure this could be a more than worthy upgrade for many – ‘Silence’ is a near impossible ask, especially if it is to be played very loudly. But this barely played copy sets the bar very high and it will take something remarkable to better it. Do no lose this one.

Cover Grade and Format: MINT(-): that based on what I can see and logic. A single matt finished cover with no laminate. Printed and made in England.

Original Shrinkwrap, Cover & Sticker: The wrap on the two thirds majority on the left is superb on front and back. This area is still smooth and largely devoid of crinkle and shrinkage. It even retains a lovely shine and is unsplit on the edges. The final third on the opening edge side, has heavy crinkle from natural shrinkage and contraction. The front bottom has also split. There is only small exposure of the main white cover and what does show looks totally unworn, and logic tells me the rest of the cover will exactly as made. The open right edge is very sharp and crisp with no real traces of thickening or burring. Lovely to see that huge original front sticker looking practically as made. Never picked at or removed, this is totally uncreased or faded, the surface colour very impressive indeed.

The Inner Sleeve & Format: EXCELLENT(++): this being very critical. An unlined thick card and again never good for the record’s surface. Most discerning collectors immediately transferred the record to a lined inner to avoid abrasions to the playing surfaces. Often too late however, as many had marked in manufacture as the LP was rammed inside the inner in the packing factory. This is very nice indeed and still white too with barely any hint of grubbiness. This has the shaped corners and the original wide top opening. Clean, fresh with few marks or visual blemishes and uncreased with all edges unsplit (or repaired). Any rim impression very faint indeed.

The Post Card: EXCELLENT(++): this is the original serrated edged type, many are smooth cut and are more common. The ‘perforations’ are all very neat indeed and have largely voided the burring and chipping many are seen with. The front has a super glossy finish with barely any dulling. Anu surface marks very few and faint and just a little mild surface creasing seen right up close. The back is very white and looking as made.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: with only very fine and faint surface marks seen critically under bright angled light. Most ultra faint and typical whispy surface blemishing so often seen with these harsh, hard card inners. A lovely visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and quite solidly pressed (a standard weight issue). A copy that appears very modestly played in context of it’s popularity, many are scarred by heavy thick spindle marks with scratched and grubby playing surfaces. Any minor surface trace marks are totally superficial and non-sounding. I remember almost holding my breath all those years ago when removing my own copy from that hard inner. Often you could hear grit and debris grinding into the surfaces as they were removed for the first time, hardly any wonder so many are seen with many fine visual marks and hairlines (or worse), especially on those still found inside it. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: I reitterate, I have heard so many bad copies of this record (that I will never contemplate offering), this copy does this album high justice. One of the most difficult, if not indeed THE most difficult album in the Floyd catalogue that will play well on vinyl, this so often has considerable crackle, often present on the majority of the record. An album with several quite passages, this becomes really critical – and somewhat irritating. If indeed anyone has a copy that plays absolutely perfectly for its entirety, well treasure it because it’s the exceptional rather than the rule. This very clean first issue plays even above it’s visual grading and it will beat many, if not most. Beautifully produced with breathtaking sound and dynamics and plays with powerful, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear. Sound quality is astonishing with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound, this is genuine high fidelity masterpiece. Such a pity the pressing quality did not alway match it. I am asked so often by regular buyers if I have a ‘perfect’ ‘Wish You Were Here’, but only very rarely can I offer a copy that even approaches that standard. An evergreen high fidelity favourite along with ‘Dark Side of the Moon’, and still used to this day to test quality systems. The astonishing sound that almost takes you into the recording studio itself with the stereo imagery of ‘Welcome to the Machine’ and the power of the bass synth offering amazing depth, slam and resolution. A real test for any equipment and pressing. The lack of pops and clicks is good news and I state again, any surface sounds are ultra gentle, very few and faint. This is a great album musically and deserves it’s masterpiece status that remains undimished over the years. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, this will give any system a real work out. I never expect ‘silence’ for this title, but this one almost excelled and it gave me that rare tingle factor only the best recordings ever can. The Sondek gleans every available piece of information that even the lauded CD remasters fail to produce. There is something really special in owning a very clean copy of ‘Wish You Were Here’ as a first issue. This impressive all-round copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
