Label Conditions: Both immaculate: this from a collection of hardly played records. The one-owner-from-new put his vinyl collection direct to cassette tape and stored the albums away.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Rarity: Moderate: although not selling in the numbers of the previous ‘giant’ Floyd albums, this still hit the top spot in the UK, although American sales were vastly down on past glories. The important factor as always is condition. So often this crackles with unwanted surface noise, but this one offers sublime sound and my play-grade was only its second. Not only does this copy look like new, it sounds like it too and is beautifully pressed on pure vinyl. To date, one of the finest examples I have seen or heard.

Brief Info: The final Pink Floyd album to feature Roger Waters, and the considerable skills of keyboard player Richard Wright are absent. In fact it can be argued this is more like a Roger Waters solo album than a full band effort as he is the only member credited with the song writing and performs near all of the vocals. It received very mixed reviews on issue but still went to No. 1 on the UK album chart. Sales in the USA were far lower than anticipated. A very downbeat concept album about war and a very personal album by Waters. An album that does grow on you, but it will never be one of my top Floyd albums. Of course essential for fans and few will better this superbly preserved example. As stated further up, the owner played it once and put on to cassette tape. It comes from the same lot as the Captain Beefheart albums I am also offering. An immaculate record that could easily pass for new with sound quality to match, this sounds absolutely stunning. Immediately you view the record, you can tell it has not been used, it truly does have that just pressed look and shine. Such major act albums were often mass-produced and quality levels can dip, but this is pressed on the purest vinyl with no manufacture flaws or crackle. The production and audio quality is simply breathtaking. An album and copy for the audiophile collector, do not lose this one.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): an unlaminated gatefold format with fairly shiny varnished surfaces. The front has the band and title sticker. Printed and made in England and includes the black inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Firstly the sticker: pristine. Never picked at or removed, this is immaculate. The front retains lovely fresh shine with any marks or creases, tiny, very few and faint. Impressively attractive.

Cover Back: Largely the same with just the odd tiny corner tip rub. NOTE: No bar code.

Cover Inner Gatefold: As made.

Top Edges: Straight, flat and flush, any rub traces bordering on minuscule.

Bottom Edges: A little fine rubbing to the right ends seen viewed end-on. Elsewhere very gentle, light and patchy.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp to very sharp with little wear. Any thickening or burring minimal, traces on the back again viewed end-on. Record enters on the back edge, both guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Solid, thick and straight with minimal hint of compression, also folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. This has not crushed with barely any tilt, still upright and rigid. A hint of a natural central ‘crease’ purely on opening that cannot really be avoided. All text is perfect and unworn and even the hinges are unrubbed or worn with no scuffs or ink loss at all.

Corners: Light tip rubs only with excellent shape retained without bashes or discernible dinks.

Cover Summary: A very fine all-round example of this well-known 1980’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. This attractive item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): practically as made. A solid black polylined inner with a little natural crinkle and minor gentle thumb-crease, but little else, this has barely aged. Fresh, no ringwear and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(–): a grading I will rarely contemplate using even if records merit it. Played just twice after my mandatory sound check as I take nothing for granted. An album I know very well since buying a copy on issue and I know pressing quality can be an issue. This plays SUPERBLY!, with practically nothing unwanted. An immaculate visual copy that is ultra clean with an amazing shine, freshness and being more solidly pressed than many I have held. Any surface traces are ultra fine, few and faint with point-blank scrutiny under bright angled light – I cannot imagine finding or hearing a much better example. Even from absolute brand new, few records would not have the odd tiny hairline or blemish if you look closely enough, as these were factory-handled for packing, and I doubt often with utmost care – where time was money. Viewed in normal room light, this looks stunning. A record with complex, and some very fine grooves, hence delicate. Visually this leads you directly back into 1983 when these first appeared in the shops and it should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This amazing record, barely even run-in in vinyl terms, plays up to it’s high visual grading and beyond with barely anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is immensely high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. A typical super-fidelity Pink Floyd album, that was never about to change and this pressing does it supreme justice. Barely even a trace of surface sound and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing just the way the audiophile listener and collector wants them. No pressing flaws or tracking issues*, few available copies will match, let alone outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Just two very careful plays for a popular record speaks volume. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove immensely difficult to find better and merits my highest possible recommendation.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
