Description
PINK FLOYD The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn
Rare original 1967 UK blue & black Columbia label MONO vinyl LP album SX 6157, housed in a front laminated flipback picture sleeve manufactured by Ernest J. Day & Co. Ltd minus 'File Under Pop' text on the back. This is a FIRST PRESSING - matrix number XAX 3419-2 is stamped on the side one runoff and XAX 3420-1 on side two.
A very collectable piece priced realistically to encourage interest and here's a completely honest description...
The sleeve is in very good nick for its age. The front is very good + with just a few hardly visible creases in the laminate (see pic), the spine is very good + with no damage, corners are very slightly worn and there is a half inch piece of wear on the bottom edge. The back (see pic) is in good to very good condition with a light crease approx 4 inches long just below halfway on the right hand side and a mark from a piece of sellotape or some such about 5 inches long near the top left hand edge. Also up there, a couple of ex-owners have written their names (small and neatly it must be said) in biro. Damn you 'Julian Harris'!!!
The inner sleeve is plastic lined paper and NOT original.
The record itself has no major scratches and plays very well. There is some surface noise noticeable in some quieter passages but it doesn't skip or stick...until the very, very end of side two. The record sticks at the end of the instrumental after 'Bike', literally with five seconds of the album left. Overall, the disc itself would be categorised as good to very good. Hardly any spindle wear. The label on both sides has a very small signature from a previous owner written in dark blue on a dark blue label so almost invisible and on side one there is an even more invisible stamp from a second-hand store picked up over the years. At the time of the album's release, British pop music was more geared toward recording radio singles in mono, so a mono version of the album is likely truer to the spirit of the times and more reflective of how bands and producers approached the recording of music when entering the studio. It certainly sounds thicker, denser, and perhaps a bit more chaotic than the stereo version, which seems to benefit the wild nature of a lot of the album's music.
