THE PIPER AT THE GATES OF DAWN : 1st Stereo pressing
Mega rare LP in overall excellent condition.
This is one of the rarest Floyd albums known today and on pinkfloydarchives.com it is at no 6 on their matrix listing and of course has the famous blue/black Columbia labels. The letters K and T are stamped either side of spindle hole on Side One denoting that tax was paid on the album.

Visual grading
For a vinyl approaching 50 years old it is in overall excellent condition. There are numerous hairlines and 2/3 fine scratches on Side Two but considering these records were often played to death in the late 60s in smoke and drug filled rooms (!) this one still plays very well as detailed below. It also lies perfectly flat on the turntable.
Play grading
Side One plays with very clear audio and has no skips or jumps at all. There is a little underlying crackle and some light distortion but is not intrusive in my opinion and only adds to the psychedelic sound of the LP. I was actually surprised how well each track played. 'Astronomy Domine', 'Lucifer Sam' and 'Matilda Mother' in particular play with excellent audio and very little interference. Whilst the final two tracks play with more distortion they remain an excellent listen for such an iconic debut LP. There are no loud pops either which is very rare for this 1967 vinyl.
'Interstellar Overdrive' plays with some crackle but the audio is very clear and has no skips, jumps or pops whatsoever, rare for such an old vinyl. 'The Gnome' is a real highlight with very clear audio and only light crackle. There is more crackle and distortion during 'Chapter 24' but I must re-iterate it remains a very good listen. 'Bike' has a few pops at the beginning and also sticks sadly about 10 seconds in. Both 'The Scarecrow' and 'Bike' have a little more crackle but are more than playable for such a rare and collectible vinyl.
Overall the audio on this highly rare classic LP is very good to excellent and the only real negative is the 'stick' on 'Bike'. On a vinyl of this age you expect some crackle and interference but this is a perfectly acceptable vinyl and any fan would be very pleased to own this wonderful piece of Floyd history.
Laminated cover
The laminated Ernest J. Day flipback cover is relatively clean for its age. The top edge does have a fine 5cm split but is not particularly obvious. Other than that the edges and spine are very clean. The corners have some rubbing and the opening edge does have some handling wear. The laminate is still in excellent condition and only has a few light creases.
The flipbacks are often found badly stained but the three here are relatively clean with just mild staining. This cover has 'File under POPULAR' on the top right flipback with the catalogue number SCX 6157 below it. There are a few other small marks on the reverse but overall this famous cover has retained its shape and quality very well over the last half century!
Labels
The blue/black Columbia labels are in wonderful condition with no markings or writing, just some spindle wear. As already stated the tax letters K and T are stamped on the Side One label.
At the bottom of the label it states "Made in Gt. Britain" and around the edge "The Gramophone Co., Ltd. All rights of the manufacturer and of the owner of the recorded work reserved. Unauthorised public performance, broadcasting, and copying of this record prohibited".
Inner sleeve
The inner sleeve is in superb condition although I do think it may be a later edition, perhaps from 'Saucerful'. Printed on cream coloured paper it features 16 LP covers on each side including 'Ummagumma' and 'The Madcap Laughs'. It has no rips or tears and is one of the cleanest I have seen. There is just a little age related marking and some creasing. Play tested on my Technics SL-J110R turntable system
