Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only a tiny few very light, fine and faint spindle traces and no wear around the hole area. This record appears hardly played and still has a large piece of vinyl residue attached to the hole, any usage of any note would have caused this to chip off.

Brief Info: The third Pink Floyd album and first without any contribution from founding member Syd Barrett, also the first album for a soundtrack for a full-length feature film. An album I rate very highly and for me, still under-appreciated and less lauded than most of other of their albums. An album of beauty and contrast with some very heavy songs and several more gentle ones. The early superb Pink Floyd sound evident with more use of Wright’s sublime and eerie keyboards and acoustic guitars. All new material with instrumentals and vocal tracks with absolutely no filler material, this is fantastic atmospheric Floyd and hardly an obvious soundtrack album and should merited as highly as their more famous works. This a later pressing, but superbly pressed, hardly played and offering impressive clean sound for what is a challenging recording with some very quiet passages. Not one I sell often, most I hear do not offer the sound I wish to offer. Pressing quality always an issue with so many with inherent crackle and pressing noises. Silence is nigh-on impossible, but this gives a very impressive account of itself and I enjoyed it immensely.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(–): a single format with the front laminated, this covers the folds and ends on the back via the spine edge. The back is matt and smooth with the second variant graphic being black and white with the couple facing east. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse, includes a plain white inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: The main issue on the front are some laminate creases, these mostly near the to and spine edges. The majority are quite fine with just a couple or three nearer moderate, one has a mild light near it also. Very fine shine and clarity retained and the graphic itself still looks impressive as-seen, a possible small fine scuff near the bottom left corner. Overall a fine looking front that gives polite clues of age.

Cover Back: Any rubbing confined to the very bottom of the lower edge and a mild pressure mark near the top against the inside flipback construction. This side has little creasing and overall still quite clean, any marks few and faint.

Top Edge: Straight, fully laminated with no wear.

Bottom Edge: The laminated fold has no wear, as often, the rear card panel end has thickened.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, fairly sharp with some patchy thickening/mild burring. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression, a very fine spine with little fault. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate, also very centred on quite a narrow depth.

Corners: Any tip rubs tiny and light, excellent shape mostly retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: A very fine all-round example of this 1970’s alternative version cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. Not for purists with some laminate creasing and mild wear, but this still quite attractive item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): a plain white unlined inner with little to fault bar the usual discolouration of the paper, here mostly near the edges and relatively light. Hardly creased with no edge splits or repairs, one tiny nick only.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): arguably better. A super visual copy that is very clean with beautiful fresh shine and quite solidly pressed. A copy appearing hardly played on all the evidence with any surface traces few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, barely anything even registers. The vinyl intensely black with no mottle or impurities, thus it has the best possible chance of playing clean – and it does with little unwanted. Visually a lovely record that should please many, if not most collectors.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This brilliant classic early-era Pink Floyd album plays mostly even above it’s high visual grading with littleg to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. I have never heard a pristine ‘perfect’ silent copy of this album, given the nature of some songs which are immensely quiet and fragile, it is near an impossible task for vintage vinyl, especially being played on clinical revealing equipment. Take the opening song ‘Cirrus Minor’, it opens with delicate bird song and gentle acoustic guitar, this the area where records are at their most perilous with handling and stylus placement. So many of these get scratched and damaged, and there are other similar fragile passages throughout the album. Few available copies will outperform this 1970s pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been more carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record – the odd sporadic tick or crackle trace is so hard to avoid totally.. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
