I will never compromise on quality, safe packaging – I NEVER use mailing envelopes that offer virtually no protection at all, and records WILL arrive damaged in them at some time as most record buyers will already know. Here, you get what you pay for – SAFE PACKING in BOXES using 7mm DOUBLE-WALL STIFFENERS including full side protection and bubble wrap, the records removed from the covers of course. All this very safe packing means I lose money on every box I post, but safe delivery is, and will always be paramount. You WILL see the difference when my packet arrives. Also, I will pay for insurance on any record that sells for over £100 at NO extra cost – that is UK and abroad. Also I aim to post the very same day after payment is received if possible. Label/Format: MGM – matt surfaces with a gentle hint of texturing. Also with a fine spotted pattern to the solid colour which is totally correct on these first labels. The most important factor, this copy is an ultimate first pressing with the MGM-CS-8120 catalogue number. Most offered have the 2354040 number which is a second or later pressing.

Label Conditions: Both fantastic, incredibly clean, fresh and highly attractive. Only a tiny few, very fine and faint spindle marks, this elusive first pressed record appears hardly played. This classic acid rock soundtrack plays superbly with little to fault. All differences between this and the reissue are mentioned further down in more detail.

Cat Number: MGM-CS-8120 (reissues carry a new number: 2354040)

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 141 grams. Way heavier than most subsequent pressings.

Rarity: Quite rare as a genuine first UK pressing. This album when issued sold in little more than minuscule numbers. Quickly deleted, then repressed with the new 2354040 number. So beware of repressings being offered as originals or first issues – only those with the MGM-CS-8120 number are. But that is not the only difference. First issues have a laminated front cover with three rear external flipbacks as seen on my picture. Second or later issues have a fully matt cover with a smooth non-flipback cover back. In any form, this is a scarce album, but originals are seldom seen or offere, they were available for the briest of time and largely went unnoticed. More interest from collectors was shown as The Pink Floyd name became popular and widespread.

Brief Info: ‘Zabriskie Point’ is a 1970 film by Michelangelo Antonioni, it was not received well by the reviewers of the day and it sunk without trace. Time has been kinder and now reappraised more favourably. I am not a film reviewer and have not even seen it before. What I do know is, the music included on the album is superb, and on that I am far more interested. It includes three important songs by the early Pink Floyd. The final song ‘Come in Number 51, Your Time is Up’, is an alternative take on ‘Careful With That Axe Eugene’ with even more manic screams – this is ‘Ummagumma’ era Floyd at their most experimental best. Other material is varied with some great songs by Jerry Garcia and his Grateful Dead, also featured are the American version of Kaleidoscope amongst some interesting others. A fantastic album that was unfortunately as popular as the movie at the time of release, hence very few sold or even noticed. This is the real deal – n ultimate first 1G/1G stamper UK issue from 1970 – with all the correct packaging and numbers. Overall, a very impressive example, the record fantastic and hardly played. The cover lightly dated with a very small signature on the back. The sound, detail and clarity is top-drawer and the material is impressive. Clearly of immense interest for Pink Floyd collectors with two unique songs and (arguably) the finest version of ‘Carefuly With That Axe Eugene’ under a different title. Being honest, there is not a track on this soundtrack I do not like, I consider it essential, and for collectors, a rare opportunity to own a first issue than the more familiar 1973 repressing.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(–): a little aged with relatively mild wear. A single format with the front laminated. This covers all the folds and ends on three external rear flipbacks as seen. The main back panel is matt and smooth. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse (later ones by Robor), this has (of course) the correct MGM-CS-812 catalogue number. The plain white inner sleeve is included.

Cover Front: A lovely looking front with any issues mainly light. The laminate retains fine shine and clarity with just one lift, this on the top left corner that has fine creasing to card. Any other creasing little and mostly very light, the main rub which is only small being on the bottom right corner tip. The graphic still looks superb with deep vibrant colour and little detracts from its beauty as seen in close-up.

Cover Back: The back has moderately lightly aged with some patchy, but quite light toning of the card to politely remind of age. It takes exceptional examples (of which I have many now on offer) to avoid this on covers half-a-century old, and there is no disputing this for a cover that went little beyond that, and with a 1G/1G record inside. A tiny darkened scuff mark near the top edge below the flipback end and a very small signature to its right towards the right, left of the catalogue number. When this small and neat, far less of significance and hardly in the line of vision. The card has avoided rubbing, creasing and ugly ring wear which is good news. All three flipbacks are solid and quite clean with just the to right having similar creasing to the front nearer the tip area. The laminate ends neat and hardly any burring and no grubbiness. Numerous fine creasing the odd tiny laminate lift never easy to avoid on any flipbacked cover. So yes, the back has aged more, but in a reasonably polite way only.

Top & Bottom Edges: Thin, but straight with the laminate still very smooth and unworn up the very ends that have small rubs.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Still quite sharp with any thickening mostly quite light. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression, the ends are lightly tapered in manufacture. The text is close to perfect under the solid still clear laminate. Just at the very top is there a mild scuff.

Corners: Moderate tip rubbing on two, light on the others. Fine shape mostly retained with no major knocks. The top left has been moderately bent in the past, hence some creasing, as mentioned already, on this area, seen more on the plain back side.

Cover Summary: An unusual pleasure to offer a true original first cover (and record) for this elusive ‘lost’ rock soundtrack. Overlooked, unnoticed and elusive, and now a rare collector’s piece, essential for Pink Floyd and Grateful Dead fans. Although politely aged on the back, still a very fine example to please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: a plain solid white unlined inner sleeve only marked down from excellent for a neat horizonal crease at the bottom. Gently darkened only with minimal other creasing and all edge folds naturally intact. This has the ‘PATENT NO. 1,125,555,’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: and arguably better, I am certain this record has hardly been played and sound quality is probably the finest I have heard from this album to date. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and quite heavily pressed on pure high-quality EMI pressed vinyl. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface marks very light, fine, wispy and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, hardly anything even registers. Only those ultra fine ‘brush’ blemishes, so often caused by the more discerning collector who used those Emitex cleaning cloths recommended in the day to remove surface dust from the record. Totally harmless, barely visible unless scrutinised directly under a bright lamp and visually a super record that should please many collectors. This will never prove easy to find better.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This brilliant acid rock soundtrack album plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is a very clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. An album with some very quiet passages, so only very clean pressings and minimal usage copies have much chance of offering the best sound. Few available copies will outperform this ultimate first 1G/1G pressing I feel sure. Matrixes never lie, this copy a first issue run. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has certainly been carefully handled. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this lovely record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended. Never under-estimate how scarce a first issue of this album is, they are seldom offered.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
