Pink Floyd, The Dark Side Of The Moon.

Original 1973 UK pressed EMI Harvest stereo LP, SHVL 804.

This issue has the following first pressing indicators:

• The label has a solid blue prism. Subsequent pressings have a blue glowing inner edge prism with the centre black.

• 'The Gramophone Co.' text is centred on label above prism.

• A2/B2 matrix in run off/dead wax areas.

• Thick heavyweight vinyl believed by some to be the 'finest' and most true encapsulation of this historical recording as the first pressing was pressed direct from the original masterplate. These first pressings were straight from the masters and nothing even gets close to them today. They play with a deep clear warm clarity and have to be heard to be believed.

• Inner sleeve is a distinctive polythene lined die cut black semi matt paper with white printed text stating two patent numbers bottom left (112555/1072844) and 'MADE IN GREAT BRITAIN' bottom right.

• Posters are printed on paper stock that has a rougher texture than the later gloss laminated issues.

  Vinyl in strong EX plus condition, and this grading mainly due to the existence of a few spider trace marks visible at centre spindle areas, although not excessively so. Vinyl surfaces still have a rich and bright gloss and are free of any visible marks. Inspecting the surfaces at close range with a magnifying glass reveals just a few light and wispy superficial hairline scuffs. No scratches or digs of any kind. Clearly although the LP has been played a few times, this has been with extreme care.

  Playback is very clean and bright and displays no ticks or clicks. I noticed the odd spot of very low level and infequent static dust crackle here and there, but aside from a cursory wipe with a slightly dampened lint-free record cleaning cloth, I have made no attempt to clean this LP, and it was fairly dusty when I acquired it.

  Labels are clean and undefaced.

  Inner sleeve close to EX with no marks, creasing of note, tears or seam splits.

  The external gatefold sleeve is fairly heavy stock, although has open ends to both gatefolds. The first issue of this sleeve is normally cited as having only one open gatefold. This is how I acquired the LP however, and I can see little reason for a guaranteed first pressing of the LP to have a later issue sleeve. The bottom left hand corner of the inner of the gatefold states "The Gramophone Co." and "File Under POPULAR: Pop Groups", which are both indicators of an early sleeve.

  Sleeve is imperfect, but has no major faults. There is a tad of whitening rubbing to front and rear panels, very similar to the kind often seen on heavy card USA sleeves. (This is most definitely a UK sleeve however!). The sleeve is still fairly square in appearance and acceptably crisp, although the edges and joints have some storage chipping and the tips are a little worn, including at head and foot of spine. No heavy wear, fraying or seam splits however. A slight imprint from a removed sticker to top right of front panel, but without surface loss, and only visible when sleeve is rotated in front of a light source. Inner of gatefold has retained good colour and is in excellent condition. No writing, staining or surface loss anywhere.

  Contains two poster inserts, as pictured, which are in close to near mint condition, and do not appear to have been removed from the sleeve for display purposes.

  Does not contain any sticker inserts.

  All in all still a very nicely preserved first issue of this near forty year old iconic LP.
