Detailed grading
Vinyl side 1/side 2: Ex-/VG. Both sides of the vinyl have retained a high gloss and the record looks like it has been well-cared for and handled and stored properly.  Side 1 looks excellent with just a few small, light marks. Side 2 has a few small marks but also has a scratch which starts on the label and extends across about half of the side. I have played the last three tracks of side 2 and the scratch can be heard during the quiet bits of 'Us and Them' and 'Brain Damage' (but cannot be heard in the louder parts). It gets more noticeable at the very end of the disk as 'Eclipse' fades out, but other than this it is not particularly intrusive.

Gradings: I have a 100% feedback rating because my records are always described accurately and fairly. I grade my records based on the UK Record Collector grading system, with (+) and (-) used to show where a grading is slightly above or below the Record Collector description. Please make sure you understand the Record Collector grading system before bidding (a summary is included at the bottom of this description).  In most cases the highest grade I will give will be NM (near mint). This will be given to a record that is not new but is above Excellent condition. I will always point out any blemishes which might detract from the item or affect its grading. Unless stated otherwise, vinyl is visually graded. The photograph is of the actual item you will get.

First pressings and originals: Many of the records I sell are first pressings and, if this is the case, I will usually identify them as such and may include the relevant matrix information etc in the description. However, sometimes I cannot be certain whether a record is a first pressing or not. In these instances I will often use the word 'original' to identify a pressing which I think might be a first pressing, but do not know for sure (but which is certainly NOT a recent pressing or audiophile release etc). If you specifically want a first pressing, and know how to identify it, please ask the relevant questions before you bid.

Insurance: Every item/order above £36 will be sent insured, unless the buyer specifically requests otherwise.  If you choose not to insure your item and it gets lost in the post or damaged you will not be able to make a claim for the full value of the item. The cost for this insurance will be at the buyer's expense and is an extra £4 in the UK and an extra £8 everywhere else (add these to the P&P costs below). Please note that for orders outside the EU I need to complete a customs declaration and must enter the value of the package on the declaration.

First LP or 12" = £3.50, each additional LP or 12" add £0.80.

First 7" or CD = £1.50, each additional 7" or CD add £0.50.

 

Europe

Double albums count as two items.  Posters, magazines, newspapers etc cost the same as LPs. Box sets and other specials will be priced accordingly.

 

All items will be very well packed using professional mailers and stiffeners as necessary. I try to recycle packaging wherever possible.

The Record Collector grading system

MINT:The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint.

EXCELLENT: The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.

VERY GOOD: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

GOOD: The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc.

FAIR: The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump. The cover and contents will be torn, stained and/or defaced.

POOR: The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.

BAD: The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection-filler.

CDs and Cassettes: As a general rule, CDs and cassettes either play perfectly - in which case they are in Mint condition - or they don't, in which case their value is minimal. Cassette tape is liable to deteriorate with age, even if it remains unplayed, so care should be taken when buying old tapes. CDs are difficult to grade visually: they can look perfect but actually be faulty, while in other cases they may appear damaged but still play perfectly. Cassette and CD inlays and booklets should be graded in the same way as record covers and sleeves. In general, the plastic containers for cassettes and CDs can easily be replaced if they are broken or scratched, but card covers and digipaks are subject to the same wear as record sleeves.

The record is totally flat with absolutely no signs of warping or dishing and looks great.

However, I have had a lot of questions about this record and, in particular, people asking about the sound quality. As stated in my listings I generally only play things which look like they might be a problem and that is why I originally played the tracks with the visible scratch. But, I’m bowing to customer power and have played the whole record through and would report the following:

Side 1 has just a few visible marks and none of these have any impact on the playability at all. The whole thing plays through perfectly with no jumps or skips and just slight background crackle on the run in and here and there elsewhere on the side, and the occasional random soft click, but nothing really worth noting. There are absolutely no repetitive clicks apart from a soft one which lasts for just three revolutions on the introduction to Time.

Side 2 has a few visible marks and small scratches and one longer scratch mentioned in the listing. The long scratch covers approximately 2 inches of recorded sound but cannot be heard for most of it. It is first audible for a period near the end of Us and Them and then cannot be heard for a while until it is audible again during the quieter passages of Brain Damage and then cannot be heard until the very end of the record when the music for Eclipse fades out . The scratch is not particularly intrusive at any point apart from in the run out when there isn’t much else going on. Other than at these points I did not notice any other repetitive clicks on the record. The only other thing worth noting was a couple of beats missed during a needle skip in the instrumental break of Money about halfway through the track. There are no vocals at this point and the record continues perfectly. Other than the points noted there was just the occasional random soft click and background crackle here and there, but again nothing worth noting.

The general sound quality of the record is great and it was a pleasure to listen to. It looks great and is a very respectable playing copy too.
