Rarity: Moderate: although quite uncommercial, this still sold well. This later copy is somewhat special however, it was a genuine unplayed copy, and I DO mean unplayed. This was still fully sealed in shrinkwrapping. I decided to carefully open the right edge to access the record to confirm the label details as some later ones change colour completely. I knew it was not a first issue due to the £6.99 HMV price sticker still on front of the wrap of course, and I am never comfortable selling records without playing them first to check the pressing quality. Especially so when I know how variable this and other Pink Floyd records can be even from brand new. This is a difficult and challenging record with many quiet passages with brass and strings as well as acoustic songs and affects. A pure fact-of-life, even brand new unplayed records are never guaranteed to sound perfect, and the more mass-produced onces especially so. Well this now once-played copy sounds very impressively with little unwanted. The odd faint surface traces are near impossible to avoid totally, but little else, and at last, an Atom Heart Mother to play and enjoy via the analogue format. Finding copies in this condition is immensely difficult, I decided to leave the wrap on the cover, so I cannot show the inside gatefold. Quite honestly, all looks as made anyway and for fans needing a copy like this, well a genuine rare opportunity for sure .

Original Year of Release: 1970. The EMI inner sleeve has a date-code 1978.

Brief Artist & Album Info: This still has to Pink Floyd’s most underrated and often under-appreciated work, ‘Atom Heart Mother’ was a very brave experimental piece. Partially written with avant-garde composer, Ron Geesin and produced by Norman Smith and beautifully engineered by Alan Parsons. It featured the first in a series of impressive album covers, designed by the Hipgnosis studio, none of which featured photographs of the band on the front. A cover most regularly seen with substantial wear and clean examples of the matt finished printings are more difficult to find. What a joy to see a Mint example still inside it’s protective shop shrinkwrap. The album’s first side is taken up with the title track broken down into six segments. Brass, choir, strings and sound effects are used throughout including a high powered motorbike near the beginning which roars from speaker to speaker, also horses and a high-speed train – all interesting for the audiophile listener. Side two offers four songs, the first three gentle more familiar period piece Floyd. ‘Alan’s Psychedelic Breakfast’ is pretty strange however – a full English with a difference – any crackle here is spitting bacon in a pan and not within the pressing (for a change). A highly challenging record with so many quiet passages, clean copies do not come easy and this now once-played record offers the most likely best sound possible outside audiophile specialist pressings. An album that suffers very badly if over-played or subjected to thick heavy pickups from yesteryear. This EMI-pressed example is very well pressed and plays through with very little unwanted. The groove patterns are complex with varying dark and light bands, wide and narrow groove widths. Telling any vinyl ‘reader’ it has varying degrees of volume, intensity and importantly, real high fidelity sound – an album that’s hugely challenging to any record deck. Overall a strong contender for the most ‘difficult’ Pink Floyd album simply due to the intricate sounds and music embedded. If you need a yellow and green UK Harvest copy that still reminds of new, well look no further – examples like this are beyond rare these days and not to be missed.

Cover Grade and Format: MINT: an unlaminated gatefold format. Almost totally covered in it’s original shrinkwrap with the HMV price sticker still attached. I can seen no flaws or blemishes at all, even the wrap is shiny and immaculate, still even tight with only a little natural crinkle on the back. I opened this to access the record as carefully as possible as I will not offer any record unless I can play it first – this simply to avoid disappointment. The white unlined EMI inner is equally fine (as it should be), this date-coded 1978.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: PRACTICALLY MINT: as close to perfect visually as they get. Under very bright angled light, the odd ultra fine surface trace, even finer than a hairline being beyond critical, but this record is simply as per packed in the factory.

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: The minor surface trace apart, this record plays beautifully and as fine and well as any standard issue copy I have ever heard. If pure silence is mandatory, well only the digital formats will truly offer than on such complex and challenging music such as this. I have heard few Atom Heart Mothers to compare and this was a real joy.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
